02 sensor

I just failed emissions today and my bank 1 sensor 1 oxygen sensor had a slow response which caused me to fail. I just called around and the average price to replace this o2 sensor is $250. I want to replace this myself but in the stickies I only saw the directions for a 95-96 max. also, how hard is this to replace? Will the bolts be rusted? thanks for your help!

i tried to change mine the other day, and it seemed impossible to get a ratchet up there (the one closer to the rad). i was able to get the socket on, but getting a ratchet on to the socket was not happening. as for the other one, just my luck, the sensor somehow is slightly bent, and the socket wasn't even able to lock on properly.i have a stock ypipe. i hope you have better luck than i did

http://www.jatan.net/02SensorFed.jpg (dont worry about the car year in the pic - same idea/concept for 4th gens)
http://www.jatan.net/02SensorFed2.jpg

Bank 1 Sensor 1 is the one on the y-pipe by the passenger firewall (close to the oil filter)

Disconnect the O2 connector thing at the top of the engine (see pic above) and then spray the outside part of the sensor with WD40 or PB Blaster. Let it sit for a while and then spray again. Then using a O2 sensor socket thing or a 22mm wrench, take off the O2 sensor. Then put on the new one and connect it to the top of the engine

If your MPG is low, its better to replace both of the front ones

aww man wtf... no wonder my ses light came back on after i changed the o2. I changed the wrong o2 sensor... that sucks for me. I thought the bank1 was the one closest to the front of the car... would make sense that bank 1 is closest to the front... but I guess not. Too bad I threw away that front o2. =\

Anyway to help you, I just went to autozone or whatever and purchased a bosch oe replacement. I think it was like 90 bucks. Now I gotte go and get another one.

Check out sparkplugs.com, I am replacing all 3 of my sensors for about 230 shipped from them. I got the site off of someone else from the forum, they sell NGK O2 sesors there that are as good if not better than OE.

That must suck, but yea the back part is bank 1 (cylinders 1, 3, 5) and the front is bank 2 (cylinders 2, 4, 6)

Buy it online for a cheaper price (look on eBay or www.oxygensensors.com)

Is there a secret combination of extentions to use with the o2 socket to get the front, bank 2 sensor off, I can not seem to get my rachet and the socket up there. I can can the socket on the sensor just fine but between the transmission and the crossmember there is not room to get the rachet on. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

thanx

Just tighten them till the compression gasket compresses. Make sure you use anti-seize on the threads.

I found that starting the engine for a while to heat the y-pipe and simply using a big adjustable wrench helped a lot. The O2 sensor socket did not work well. Please don't forget to put anti-seize grease on the sensor.

thanks i will try that. because i agree, the socket really was not working out. just like OpieAB, it seemed like there was no way to get the ratchet up there.

well i finally got it done. i used an open end wrench, and once i got it to lock on, tapped it w/ a heavy hammer. both of them broke free easily. wasn't much room to turn the wrench at all, it kept hitting the ypiipe / heat shield. i had to bend the heat shield slightly to get enough room to turn the wrench.

front right 02

I found the front left 02 sensor and the the one at the cat is easy to see also. But i can't even find the front right 02 sensor. If i could jack the car up it would probably help but i can crawl under there pretty good and i just cant see it. the one at the CAT is WELDED on. WTF!

From under the car it looks like a shield is blocking my view where the y pipe first goes up into the engine. Some kind of plate, so i can't see up there to find the front right 02 sensor. and that's the one throwing a code.

Can anyone help me ?!

My check engine light was on and I had it computer diagnosed.
I got error code: PO150 Bank 2 , Sensor 1.

Also my mileage now is 13 m/g in the city.

I was told it's one of the front O2 sensors.

I would like to buy the sensor on eBay but I don't know which one do I need.

I know that there are 2 sensors in the front: one on the radiator side and one near firewall side.
Are two of those front sensors the same or they are different ???
Which of the two sensors do I need ? and where can I find it on eBay ?

I looked on ebay, all sensors they sell called just "Front" or "Back" and I dont see any "Radiator side" or "Firewall side" sensors.

I have 97 Maxima GLE.

Thanks

Hey, I was trying to find the Bosch sensors that I bought on ebay, but it looks like they're all sold out. But these sensors will work too, and they're about the same price as the Bosch: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-N...59920764QQrdZ1

Universal sensors work well, and save you a lot of money. All you have to do is splice them in to your existing harness. Takes about 20 minutes, and you save a good amount of money. The two front sensors are the same. There are only 2 available in that link, so you should act quick before someone grabs them. $19 is a great deal, so to avoid doing the same job again possibly in a couple months, I would just replace them both at the same time if I were you. I know how it feels, my gas mileage was just about as bad as yours. The new sensors helped.

Just posted the following info. on another thread "List of common problems with 4th gen"...
but this looks like an appropriate thread to post it again..
if you own a 1996 model, this will definitely help.

Front Right Heated O2 sensor
(Front Left/Right O2 sensor = Left/Right in this case refers to the left/right bank of the engine. The "Left" sensor is the one furthest to the front of the vehicle.)

OR:

O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
(Bank 1 refers to Right Bank of the engine which is on the passenger side and there is only one sensor on that side so nothing to worry about Sensor 1)

Look at the diagram at: http://www.courtesyparts.com/A32_O2-sensors.html

Also, if your car is 1996 model and you NEVER changed ANY of the O2 sensors, you might want to call your local dealer and find out about Service Campaign Bulletin 'NTB98-073a'.

While searching on Google to see if I can fix it myself, I found:

http://lyberty.com/car/Maxima_A32_do...NTB98-073a.pdf

I called both, Nissan itself and my local dealership. Both said they still honor this so I am going there in a week or two to get it replaced at NO COST for part and labor.

As per above NTB they only fix the O2 sensor as per the ECU code but I am planning to talk them into replacing all three sensors along with the EVAP canister

I will post again once I deal and done with them.

need some expert advice

replacing all three O2 sensors on my 99. front two were no problem to remove once i used the open ended wrench plus hammer technique. thanks for posting that one. the specialty socket did no good.

i can not get the rear to budge though. i am working off of ramps so clearance is an issue. i attempted to use a 22mm open wrench and the sensor socket with no success. the hammer does not help either because my exhaust does not provide resistance against the impact. help please!

my second question involves PB Blaster. i sprayed both front sensors with the stuff prior to removal. after taking the car for a quick spin around the block, i noticed smoke coming from the front sensor area. it was a light smoke and didn't appear to be coming from the sensor itself but the area around it. is this just the PB Blaster burning off the surface of the surrounding area?

thanks.

Dude i did mine a while ago and got em from i think sae autoparts ..i found them off of ebay...they were 20 bux a piece for the 3 wire fronts....i bought 2 and the only problem was one wasnt long enough, so i spliced it and works like a charm!! very easy fix just go to autozone and they will let you borrow the socket or wrench wich ever u prefer for 40 bux, and when u return it they give u the 40 back...and believe it or not i was surprised being 20 bux a piece how good the quality was...and they ship fast!...i forgot the name brand but they were a well known brand!
saeparts.com.......just seen some for 15 bux! delphi i think! they come in a retail box with the anti sieze coumpound included! its a 10 minute job!

250$ is waaaaayyyyyyyy too much for an O2 sensor haha. But good luck getting it out...the heat over time causes the O2 sensor to get somewhat welded to the exhaust and it's a pain to get it out.I went through 2 O2 sensor sockets trying to get mines out.Goodluck

I find that if the last person used the anti seize like they
are supposed to do, they come off with just

O2 sensor

02 sensor-nissan_maxima_o2_sesnor_2.gifHi,
My son's car, a 99 Cali. We're replacing the whole exhaust from the manifolds back to the resonator. The muffler was changed last year. My question is about the O2 sensors. We're going to replace all of them, I count four. I called the local Nissan dealer to get the OEM part numbers to aid in my search. I wasn't sure if any or them were duplicates. This is what I found, and the way the parts person relayed it to me. Apparently the dealer manual picture is pretty bad. These 'locations' are physical, might not be correct by the term:

Front Upper(Front Bank 2,Blue,in manifold) OEM 226A14L711, Bosch 15965, NTK 24572

Front Pipe (Rear Bank 2, Red, below pre-cat and before Y-pipe) OEM 226914L701, Bosch 13948 NTK 24521, SG1242

Rear Upper (Front Bank 1, White, near firewall, below manifold) OEM 226904L000, Bosch 13242, NTK 24018 or 24525

Y-pipe (Rear Bank 1, White, in front of Y-pipe) OEM 226A04L710, Denso 234-4476, NTK 24574 or 24640

I've searched eBay for the different manu parts, they're all there with various prices. I usually get my parts from Advance Auto, but I wasn't comfortable with their descriptions. Plus, there prices were a bit higher.

Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I hope this helps....

Bob

WD-40 and a Vise grip worked pretty well for me when I did mine, plus I paid like $17 for it on ebay, and it as not failed me yet after months
