AC Compressor Replacement
AC Compressor Replacement
Hey guys, I know there's been threads about this. However I would like to know if any of the 4th gen compressors would work with any of the 4th gen maximas. I don't think this question has been asked before but if so, I apologize for reposting.
I've wondered this myself. I have read that it must be the exact month/year. So if your car was built in 7/95 then you had to have a 7/95 compressor, but that didn't really make sense to me. I figure if you look at the build date for your car just get the same year compressor as the build year.
Bump for a good question.

I was but then I have to evacuate the existing charge in the system and I don't have the machine to do that. I don't wanna chance at letting it just exit into the atmosphere. And since it would be a lot of hassle taking it to a shop to get them to evacuate the system and then take it home to replace the compressor, and then taking it back to the shop to get the system recharged, I'm just going to let them do all the work. I'm sure it wouldn't be that expensive.

wrong..
i tried a 95 and 96 ac compressor in my 97 maxima.. the lines were different. 95-96 can be interchangable, but not onto a 97+ 4th gen..
Wow thanks for clarifying. That pretty much verified what the guy at the yard was saying. There are a few 96 compressors there that I saw last weekend, I'm going to pick one up this afternoon. What made me not pick up a 96 before was the difference in part#'s. One 96 compressor has a different number than the other 96. Makes me wonder if this is crucial.

I finally picked up an AC compressor from the yard last saturday and I'm just getting around to getting this thing installed and my AC up and running again. I got an estimate from 3 people and the most reasonable is this guy who quoted me $200. That would be to remove the old compressor, install the new one, and recharge the system. He said something about an AC filter that might need to be replaced which will cost an additional $50. I asked him to show me where the AC filter is and he pointed at this cylinder looking thing right next to the radiator (right side in close proximity of the car battery). Does anyone know if this is true? Just don't want to get ripped off even for a little bit.
I have a 97 maxima with automatic climate control and I know it has a variable flow compressor, therefore it doesn't "click" on and off like the kind with the manual climate control. The AC does OK on the highway but not at idle or in traffic, oddly enough, if the AC is not working well, and I turn the car off for a few minutes then turn it back on it works well.
I think either the expansion valve is sticking (assuming the car has one I have to check), or the compressor is going bad and the valve that controls the freon flow is sticking.
Any ideas from others what causes this?

I have a 97 and have a 96 system. I don't know why. Beware that they did some crazy part swapping in 96-97. It has been a pain in a$$ trying to secure parts for the thing. If you are changing the compressor it would be a good idea to change the expansion valve and the filter/drier. I got the compressor and expansion valve from Advanced Auto. I have not been able to get the right filter/drier from any parts store as of today (got 2 wrong ones). 97 A/C system = Pain in the A$$!

The compressor I got (which is for a 95) did't fit! Seems like Nissan changed compressors sometime that year. The fittings for the lines are too big. The mechanic is going to swap clutches from the junk yard compressor to the compressor that is in my car. Hopefully that works.
I checked Pinnacle Nissan and the clutch costs more than the compressor itself (w/ clutch). Go figure!
