Car shaking to the beat of the engine
Car shaking to the beat of the engine
Well I woke up this morning and my car was shaking like a salt shaker. Yesterday it was fine but the moment I started it up it was shaking in idle. Then I put in reverse and the shaking got stronger. I tried all the gears on my automatic tranny and only park and neutral shook softly the others were strong. I guess when the engine engages with the tranny it makes the car shake stronger. I have no idea what it could be...anyone experience this?
As the RPM's go up the shaking sensation goes away, probably because the car is shaking at such a high frequency that each successive shake blends with the previous one.
Also of note is that the idle RPM looks good and the RPMs will accelerating is smooth. It's constantly at 700 when at idle. Acceleration and power feel normal too.
Please help....TIA.

Yea it sounds like a dead miss at idle, could be something coil related, or a bad spark plug. The first test i would do would be to disconnect each coil one at a time. If the cylinder is firing the engine should stall, or just about stall. But if you pull one coil and nothing changes in the idle you know that’s the cylinder with the problem.
Sounds like mine when I bought it, with a choked air filter, plugs that were drawing their pension, and a raft of bad sensors.
One bank of the motor is down on power for some reason. That's causing an imbalance that makes the motor shake. You'll have to track which cylinder(s) are down in power.

ECU code 0606
Well CEL came one. I pulled code 0606, Cylinder 3 misfiring. How do I check for a bad spark plug and bad coil pack? Is it bad for the engine to be driving around with a misfiring cylinder?

i still have my old ones, i know they weren't all bad, do you want to buy them from me? 30 bucks.

If they were all bad my car would run like ****. Honestly I don't know if any of them were bad cause when I tested them I didn't get a bad reading and I never got a code.
My car only misfired at idle periodically if it was in fact a misfire.
Assuming they are original they have 130k miles on them. I just figured itd be a cheap alternative to spending double that for ONE coil pack.
You could check ebay too though. I honestly think I have an electrical problem with my ground cause it still idles hard.

Well I swapped the ignition coil on Cyl 3 with the one in Cyl 1. It still had the same problem for a little while and now it's gone. I just ordered new NGK's. We'll see if that fixes the problem permanently. If coils go bad is it sporadic like this or do they just die from one day to another. How about plugs?
yeah, i've had this same problem before. it started happening this last winter when the car got really cold. if i ran it for a few minutes before i went anywhere, it wouldn't do it. it got really grouchy once on an hour long road trip and started flashing the CEL at me, but i made it home okay. now that summer's in full swing, i haven't had it happen but once or twice. The code reads a Camshaft Position Sensor fault, and a cyl 3 misfire, so i'm thinking one coil pack is finally giving out...but is it odd that it only really did it badly when it was cold?
