Is My Starter Goin?

hey recently my starter has been making a funny noise after it starts.. it keeps makin a grinding noise it sounds like one of those cheap wind up toys that you push and they keep going on there own till they wind down. it is also an intermittent problem, after the car warms up it seems to stop ? i recently tried to make sure it was grounded prperly and it was.. the ground battery cable looked good no rust I also have a clifford 3.5s security remote start with anti grind and it still grinds? it was doing it before I installed the remote start and now its doing it after thanx for any help

It's getting clogged up with dust and the grease is drying out. Basically the gear that spins the flywheel isn't getting out of the way after you crank the engine, and you're hearing the teeth of this gear bump the teeth of the flywheel. Run a search for 'starter noise fix' or look for it in the how-to stickies and you'll find info on how to disassemble it a little bit and re-grease it.

I have the same problem now and I need to pull it and regrease to fix it. It will have to wait until I get back to the mainland and drive it again. Right now it is just sitting in the driveway until 2008.

umm...u better have someone go there n start it at least once every 1 1/2 months. if ur car sits for THAT long without being started. It is DEFINATELY not good for a car to sit that long.

My dad is taking care of it until I get back there and pick it up. He's replacing my tranny oil right now. I miss it bad but I bought a 2006 BMW 330i for my wife and drive it when I can till I get back and drive the Maxima again.

I have a 1997 Maxima and it has starting problems. Most of the times, it doesn't start in one go. I have to try at least 2-3 times and I have noticed that I have to turn the key really swiftly for it to start. Anybody knows what might be the problem? Do I just need to replace the starter? I was looking online and it costs about 135$. Could it be a cheaper fix? as in some electrical wiring?

mines is a 95 max and i'm also having a problem that is similar. sometimes it started with 2 or 3 go's but lately its starting to take up to 4 or 5. i was thinking it could be maybe the alarm. is there a way to test the starter without having to take it off, or will a diagnostic be able to tell me if its the starter or not.

Either no grease, or you have a slow solenoid, which is caused by no grease.

Hope the starter is eaisly accesible
