Trunk Rack for bicycle

Guys,
I have a 97 Maxima GLE (all stock). I would like to know if anyone uses a trunk rack to transport their bicycles around? I called up Thule and Rhode Gear and they said that their trunk racks will NOT work on my Maxima because the trunk is too weak to support the rack. Saris which makes a plastic composite trunk rack says that their rack will fit, but I'm not sure I trust them and I'm a little reluctant to shell out the dough for the rack only to find out it damaged the car. Is anyone using the Saris or any other rack on their Maxima?

Besides this issue, the car just rocks!!

I got scratches and dents in my trunk hood when I used a regular bike rack. What I did the last time I had to use it was put a thick blanket down between the bike rack and the trunk and no new dents or scratches.

Saris makes nice carriers

I can't comment on the trunk rack specifically, but personally I would only put a Thule (I have their roof rack), Yakima, or Saris carrier on any of my cars to transport my Klein.

Bike racks

I've had both the Saris trunk carrier called (bones) which is excellent for cars with spoilers. This rack now comes in like 5 colors so ask what they have at the shop. The downside to the rack are not scratches but instead it left black smudges or rubber marks on my trunk. I then returned it and bought the Saris roof rack. That one I can't complain about since it holds the bike upright with both wheels on and I've had it about a year and a few days. If you got questions feel free to drop me a line.

Re: Bike racks

The Saris Bones is an excellent rack except for smudges, the roof racks can eventually damage the door seals. Mount the 1.5" receiver hitch under the back bumper for 150.00 and then add a reciever mount mast. I have a Grabber that holds 4 bikes for 100.00. I can still access my trunk with this setup too.
My bikes are $1K plus rides so I don't leave anything to chance to carry them and I don't want my Max damaged. Downside, watch out for driveways and parking lots with a dip into the street. The mast will hit bottom because it sticks out over one foot from bumper.

Good luck...

Re: Re: Bike racks

Definitely go with the Saris Bones rack. Fits nicely and doesnt screw up your spoiler. Have not seen any marks on the paint yet. Bought from Cycletech.com for $99 shipped.
