Whining noise under acceleration

I've had my maxima to a transmission shop over a pretty pronounced whining sound that comes under moderate to heavy throttle in 1-3rd gears. I also hear the noise (but much less) when breaking. The transmission shop said its not the transmission which I do believe but the noise still is very suspect and the car didnt always do it. Is there some other part in the drivetrain that could make such a loud whine under load?

Are you manual or auto?

I had it due to my alternator. Once changed, all was fine.

Its a manual tranny. The whining noise is extremely loud in the interior. It overtakes the sound of the motor which is why im concerned. The sound does not appear unless the car is in motion. Its not tied to rpms.

does the noise go away when you put in the clutch?

it will because load is taken off the engine/drivetrain. The noise gets higher in pitch as the speed goes up until its too high to hear in 3rd gear. The same noise can be heard going lower in pitch under moderate breaking. The noise is much less pronounced in breaking.

Have the same whinning noise, but went away for a few months & came back yesterday! It ended up being the alternator. So, have your alternator checked out!

I had a transmission guy look at it and he told me it was not transmission related. He said if the transmission was making that kind of noise, gears would be coming through the case. He thought it was in the engine compartment somewhere. If I thought the alternator would cure the problem, I would replace it in a heartbeat. I assume a whine coming from an alternator would sound the same at the same rpm. I bet you have it in 2nd gear as well (if its the same problem I have). I thought it was only in first until I listened really carefully. Its much higher pitched but still there. It gets too high pitched to hear around 50 in 3rd. Sometimes the whine oscilates from loud to soft and other times its just a constant loud noise.

Although I haven't heard your car's noise, it is possible for a functioning tranny to be whining and loud. It just takes a few chipped gears. However, it doesn't come from nowhere, and tranny gear whine usually only happens when torque is going in one direction. So gear noise will either happen on coast down with the clutch engaged, or on acceleration, but not both.

Definitely check out the alternator. You might try removing the belt, starting the car, and running it for a few minutes to see if that stops the noise.

I have the same problem, I got a tube and put it right on the alt. and it was defainlty it. I am going to try change it tomorrow. I ordered a rebuilt from autzone online for 120 dollars with lifetime warranty. Does anyone have some tips doing the alternator?

Should i go from underneath it or try it from above?
