Nah on mine it didn't go away either. I actually kinda liked the sound for the first week then it just got damn annoying. I discharged my a/c lines dropped my old compressor, put the new one in....recharged the a/c system and it was quiet as ever. Till my timing chain started rattling!!!!! damn tensioner

well guys when I went to move my car into my driveway smoke was roaring out of my grill so I lift the hood put my hand on the alternator and its def. the problem not to mention that that's where heat and a burnt electrical smell were irradiating from when I turned the car off..
Moral: if you have a '98 manufactured between 2/97 and 2/98 do yourself a favor and at least check with the dealer to see your alty has ever been replaced. Otherwise prepare for smoke or worse as some orgers have stated, "a fire."

Hey Knight, the only thing I replaced was the compressor itself....and recharged the a/c. The Haynes manual recommends you change some other parts when you drop the compressor, but in my opinion I iddn't see it necessary.

Thanks for a reply!..I've had that sound for almost 3 months now, mine is definetely the a/c compressor since I have replaced the alt and idler pulley.. I haven't bought one yet, but here in canada, they're very expensive brand new, so I might have to go the ebay route, that sound is very annoying. My a/c stills works fine and blows ice cold.

I'm not suggesting this is the problem with your car, but my car had a S/C type whining too. Well i'm 5 spd, and my clutch was slipping and it seemed the worse the clutch got, the louder the whine was. I actually had a kid at the gas station ask me if it had a blower cause i was revving it to see if it might go away. My clutch ended up going 2 days later....took the tranny off to replace it and found out my clutch wasn't that bad, it was the throwout bearing--it came apart (yes in 2 pieces!). I read up about it, and found out they make that sound when going out. If you are 5 spd too, and you're having trouble with your clutch, this is could be your problem....if you find out it is, replace the throwout bearing ASAP!!! mine came apart and messed up the clutch fork (holds the T/O bearing)...if the same happens to you, good luck finding that part....i tried Autozone, O'Reilly, NAPA, Pep Boys, CarQuest, and Advance and none of them could get it....i had to go to Nissan for it--waited a week and payed 3x what Autozone, etc. would have charged if they coulda got it. good luck
