pop off the sides c-pillers and then pop off the deck lid, just like a door panel, it has panel pops.

Is there a need to take off the back? You need to go through the trunk to change them I thought? Maybe not

I just kinda ripped the covers off...it worked fine...but now they just kinda sit on top, not screwed down anymore for obvious reasons, but there perfectly secure, they don't fly off on turns or anything.

There used to be a great webpage that showed step by step how to remove the stock Bose system (deck and speakers) with pictures in the 4th gen Maxima. I used it when I replaced my stereo. But now they charge for the info, how lame:
http://www.carstereoremoval.com/htm/...xima95_99P.htm

This one shows how to remove the stereo from the dashboard:
http://www.installdr.com/InstallDocs...PDF/647021.pdf

Front doors are easy. 3 screws: door handle, 2 on the bottom, and then pull out the plastic piece in the latch handle (a little tricky, just wiggle it around a lot). Pop the panel off starting from the bottom, around the side, then lift it off the door. A couple of wiring harnesses are all that's left. Takes me less than 5 min.

Accessing rear speakers requires removing rear seat and popping rear deck up. Pull 2 latches on the bottom-front of rear seat with your finger, pull seat up and out. Exposes 2 bolts on the sides that secures seat back - remove those. Open center armrest, pull up on plastic in the hole. Exposes 2 more bolts, remove those. Push seat up off of mounting hooks. Voila. Pop rear deck by carefully pushing upward. I released it just enough to get the old speakers out and new ones in. Use a stubby screwdriver.

Good luck.
