UNGODLY gas mileage!

Hello all, I am getting TERRIBLE gas mileage...im talking an 1/8th of a tank per five miles...I have NEVER seen it this bad...it also misses as well at idle. Here is what I have doneso far in attempt to correct this issue: Changed fuel filter, changed spark plugs(NGK Plats) and coil packs(OEM), changed air filter, changed fuel pump, changed out all the vacuum hoses and EGR parts/cleaned EGR tubes, completely cleaned the throttle body... what else could there be?? Also, the fuel injectors are stock and are REALLY loud....it's getting to the point to where it sounds as if the pistons are slapping the valves, but I know it is the injectors as I almost go deaf when I put an engine s***hoscope to them. What brand do you guys recommend? Is Beck/Arnley ok? This is where I get all my parts from, so if you see any on here that should work well, PLEASE let me know!!!

Thanks very much in advance!
Andy

Depending on the mileage of your car and if its the stock engine, maybe its time for you to get a new engine or at least a used engine with less mileage on it. Maybe a 97 or 98 model.

Maybe injectors are staying on way to long.. Does exaust smell like raw gas? Also check for ghost codes.. Maybe a knock sensor or something. Try disconnecting one injector at a time and seeing if engine gets alot worse or just a little worse. Just a few ideas..

Because it's not plausible. EGR is primarily for emissions, not for mileage.

ditto....

egr doesnt ruin ur gas milage...

posible knock sensor, hte i30t i just bought didnt have a check engine light.. but i knew the kock was bad ... so when i took it out.. the sensor was acutlaly cracked.... and still no CHeck engine... so thats a good place to work up from... and the motor replacement is extreme at this point.. cause i have a 139 and its still going strong...

So the knock sensor can be bad without triggering the CEL? Also...I have a bunch of evap codes...but I already changed the parts from a younger car (70kmi) and they are already bad (changed about 10kmi ago). I believe the code I have is PO443. I've searched this but didn't really find that much about it when I did...anyone have any ideas? I'm getting 15mpg. I'm gona search again but if anyone has any input this would be great for me. My mileage seemed to drop when the EVAP went. Maybe the OP is having the same issue but his isn't triggering the CEL?

15MPG is what I get mixed city/highway with a bad KS. Why is it that those of us in NY always get ****ty milage compared to everyone else?

Using common sense, 40 miles to a tank, which is 18.5 gal (this has been debated before, sometimes I think this forum is crazy), I would say leak, or miscalculation. But I would not drive the vehicle before the problem is resolved. With all the replies so far, I can't believe nobody has mentioned the cd player or windshield wipers as being a possible cause.

wow that sux....even though everyone on this board is all about doing work on their cars theirselves i think this may require a mechanic. either that or you could listen to all of the possible problems and chase the problem while spending a ton of $. this could be something you would rather a mechanic look at and give you a definite answer before spending more than needed. up to you but thats my 2 cents.

If the injectors were putting too much gas in the cylinders, i.e. running rich, that catalytic converter would get extremely hot. Is there an eerie red glow under your engine?

At 2miles/gal there's a lot of gas going somewhere. Could the carbon canister behind the drivers rear wheel be the culprit? Maybe it only leaks when you're running the engine after the vacuum has built up in the tank?

This is a weird one!

1/8 tank in 5 miles would be about 40 miles per tank.

I call on that.

The amount of fuel needed to be dumped into your cylinders would completely foul out your plugs, causing the car to spew black smoke out the tail pipe and basically leaving you stranded.

It wouldn't run......

Calculate your gas mileage correctly and get back to us.

another way of looking at it.....

at 40mph you do 5 miles in 8 mins or so.
If your car is running at all your probably only burned 1/3 gall of gas.

1/8 tank gas is 2-1/4 galls so your car is dumping 2-1/2 pints of gas every minute somewhere. You can't miss that!

You say your car is driveable. If you were to drive 40 miles would you empty the tank?

Perhaps your gas gauge is broke?!?!?!?

You need to remove you injectors, and have them cleaned.

As for the not being able to run, you are incorrect. This is a four stroke motor. The gasoline is evacuated every other stroke, and spark is only applied on one stroke. So half of your gaslone is being ejected without being used. You can make a car run at a 5:1 AFR, but it will run miserably and have no performance to it at all. This would eventually destroy your o2 sensor as well. However, it's very unlikely without an EMS to adjust for it.

You knock sensor would throw a code, and you would get better gas mileage.
Your EGR would throw a code, and it would not affect your gas mileage much. BUT it does affect it slightly due to having cooler combustion temps when not at WOT, where the EGR disengages.

If the gauge was broke, he would notice it. IT says he has 1/4 tank left, and it takes $5 bucks. I'm pretty sure he would notice
www.witchhunter.com does a good job, and are fairly cheap. They will even send back your flow charts.

Are you sure your fuel gauge is working correctly?

Have you actually filled it up when it hits E and actually put in ~18gallons of gas?

njmaxseltd is right in calling ...something doesn't add up.

Also...you are certain that there isn't anyone siphoning your tank when you're away from your car, right?

You haven't even checked your gas milage the CORRECT way. You have to fill the tank all the way, set odometer to zero, dirve, nearly deplete the tank, refill the tank all the way again and then divide the number of miles diven on the tank by the number of gallons on your ticket from the filling station.

That is the only logical explanation i can think of. I get 18 MPG and i hate it. With the gas prices right now, stealin gas aint such a bad idea. LOL!
