Air con + fans: need some advice

I've been having problems with the air con. (This is an auto climate control). Sometimes it works fine and other times, just barely. I took it for a check and the guy told me it was full of gas. A second place told me the same and said it must be the HVAC controls, basically that the control flaps must be not opening/closing properly.

But yesterday I noticed this: The cold pipe wasn't getting as cold as it should, despite the fact that the gauge shows 60 pounds pressure (low side). Then I noticed that the electric fans were not running.

I had thought that with the AC turned *on* the fans *must* run?
The AC was set to 'manual' operation at the time.

When I pushed the 'auto' button the fans started immediately and the cold pipe started to get pretty cold. The problem with auto is that the blower tends to come on full which is a bit undesirable if you don't want to get blown out of the car, then you have to mess about with the temp setting...
Any ideas?

Push the auto button and then adust the fan speed button. The only way the ac will come on is the auto button. The screen will say auto and manual at the same time. Damn Japanese auto makers.

Yea, you must use AUTO to make the compressor run. You can make manual adjustments to the air flow direction or fan speed, but you must have the system in AUTO operation in order for the compressor to run.

Proper operation of your climate control system can be found in your owners manual.
Provided you have one.....

Yes, it behaves like you described. Still have the problem though; I'm wondering if the compressor is failing. It's the only thing I can think of. The expansion valve was changed a while ago.
