Not a good day...
I am having some issues here... I wired up my new O2 sensor when i changed my tranny. Appearently one of the crimps i made came loose when I installed it last week and the O2 sensor code has been there for a week. So I got under there today and re crimped it back on and plugged the O2 sensor back in a reset the ECU and drove around for while and the O2 sensor code didn't come back. Then I parked and came back out to my car and started it up. It started slow... I drove one block and the car died... I got it jumped and drove back to my house. The brake light and seat belt light were on... I tested the voltage with the engine running... 11.8 volts... alternator's dead... I just can't believe that this is a coincidence... I must have screwed up rewireing the O2 sensor. Maybe I lost track of which white wire went to which... damn bastards putting 2 white wires... but then the code for O2 never came back (nothin but 0505) So I wonder if it really is that I wired O2 wrong... I just need some help

I tested the O2 sensor per the FSM... It is all in spec. So I don't think I wired it wrong... What could I have done
Is this just bad luck?... I can't afford the money or time to replace anything else...

OK. I really hope someone can answer this question. If I was a dumba$$ and switched the two white wires around when I wired up my O2 sensor (I bought the Universal one that needs to be crimped on) could this somehow have grounded out something and caused my alternator to die? My understanding of the O2 sensor it that the two white wires go to the O2 sensor heater and switching the two (though prolly not good) should not be a problem, or at least would not kill the alternator... I did test the harness with the volt meter. None of the pins were grounded out (which leads me to believe that there was no short). the heater resistance between pin 1 and 3 was correct and no continuity existed between the others. I just want to make sure I have this figured out before I go and replace the alternator and battery so I don't go and kill another one. It could just be a big coincidence that it died right after I replaced the O2 sensor and it wasn't really anything I did, but I really need someone with more experience to verify. (no codes btw, and I did drive for 20 minutes or so after I replaced it) Thanks.

I wouldn't think it would, but either way I don't think I did. I think it's just a coincidence that the alty died right after I replaced the O2. Sucks... Not gonna be a cheap fix. The sad thing is that after I changed my tranny on my own without having to pay someone... I am now actually gonna pay to have my alternator changed just because I have absolutely no time (or patience) now that school has started back.

3d man,
Sounds like a coincidence to me, since you don't have the 0505 code anymore. When I lived in Houston in 02 ( i bought my Max there) there was a foreign car shop off of Dairy Ashford that did decent work and didn't rip you off. I think the shop is called Majestic something or another. Hope this helps.

loverholic,
Called my son at home, heres the info, I was mistaken tho it's not on Dairy Ashford. The shop is Auto Check at 2843 S. Kirkwood, their phone number is 281 496-6900. They worked on my Saab 9000 numerous times and got my Maxima ready for life on the Germany autobahn before I shipped it there for 3 yrs. They had free towing if you got your car fixed by their shop, although I never used it (AAA for life).

Cool. All these responces at once. thanks for the help. My dad paid for the dealer to fix it. (he insistead...) We'll see how baddly they rip us off... It's always fun to try and guess what bull**** charges they will add to the bill. Anyway. Now the part and service is warranteed so I don't have to worry about it anymore and if anything else breaks I will drive it off a cliff (as we have many in houston... big ones)

I think you misread his post. 0505 is the code for "A-O.K.; all clear". He said he had nothing but 0505, meaning no codes. Everything was fine. In other words, yes he does have 0505, and nothing else. That is what you want.

Just a side note when getting the Alty, if you have a high wattage stereo in the car I wouldnt get another nissan spec alty, they are too weak it will keep dying on you, get one beefed up. just a note hope it helps.
