Is this car worth it?

Hi, I guess this is a best place to ask this question. If not , then mods will move this thread.

Im looking to buy this car its a

1996 Maxima SE 5 speed with 103,000 miles. I will buy it from original owner (father and a daughter) I was wondering if the car is worth it.

It has: brand new clutch, brand new starter, both o2 sensors and bunch of other stuff. Now, it needs this:

Driver side Axle, rear brakes & rotors (possibly calipers), Knock sensor and a passanger side wheel bearings (it makes the squeaking noise)

The price is $3100 Does it seem like a good deal? The car is in very good condition, clean title and stuff, drivers great and engine sounds healthy. Or are they asking too much? Thanks for your advice

Sounds like a decent buy. As long as its been well maintained and still looks decent. Besides you will regret buying an autotragic maxima, there no fun! There is always room to negotiate when buying a used car, it saved me 2000$ and a free alignment!

I would say yes it is definately worth that cause I paid 3k for my 95 and it needed both axles and new front brakes and clutch within 20k probably and the body is rough. He already has the clutch done and that is like a 600 dollar job and the starter isn't too cheap either. Axles are easy to do yourself and so are brakes and I'm not sure about the wheel bearing but it sounds liek you have an honest seller and I would go for it if you are mechanically inclined.

Just make sure you like the color / interior etc... because you will be stuck with it probably for another 150,000 miles.

lol It looks very hot I loooove the foglights and power roof

Yeah I will do the Axle, knock sensor + rear brakes myself. Not sure about the wheel bearing but as long as its duable I will try it. ( I will read more into it later)

Thanks for the quick feedback fellows

I think its a good buy. I paid 6000 for my 96 se with 84500 in 2002. Just make sure it is really what you want, as far as color and options b/c I hate the color of mine and the leather but I wanted the 5 speed.

3100 sounds reasonable, just make sure you have money for the little nuisances that show up. most maximas that old would need new shocks if they havent changed those already.. and new shock mounts if shot strunts have been bottoming out alot. just check their maintanecne record to see what the car needs as routine maintainence(you can use that as bargaining chips on price as well).

The car is a good buy at $3100. I wouldnt try to low ball this guy. He is trying to sell it for an honest price. The PARTS will be aprox: rotors are about $200 for a complete set, pads for another $100, and axles for another $100. The knock sensor is another $100. I'm not sure about the wheel bearing. How does he know it's a wheel bearing? Could be the tie bar end links making the squeel which are $50. So for an aproximation your looking at around $500 in parts.

^^ she said she took it to a mechanic and they told her its a wheel bearing.

Yeah Im going to fix everything gradually. First being an axle then breaks, wheel bearing and knock sensor. Not everything in one week.

A steal. 95's are the fastest since they have no emissions equipment. The car probably hasn't been ridden rough. You can engine swap it with no troubles since the ECU doesn't care. Look on the group deals for Brembo Blank rotors ... they are better and cheaper than OEM. Good find and keep us informed.

Why not? the cheaper the better! at worst the seller will say "no im not going any lower". When you are purchasing a used car have no emotions unless your buying it from family or relatives

Cus its already low, and he is has already told you everything wrong with the car. If someone low-balled me, I'd tell him to take a hike since the price is low already. It's not about emotions your right. When deals come you should jump on them if that is what you want.

That's very reasonable for a 96 SE,adult driven. The problems that you listed are about the only things to go wrong with a 100K Maxima,so after repairing those probs, you're set.

I think it's a good deal. What is the body like? Bodywork costs $$ more than minor mechanical stuff.

I dont think he wouldnt sell him the car if he made an offer that was to low and then paid what the seller wants.

Depending on the are you are, that may be a decent buy.

I, however, bought my 99 Maxima on Saturday with 81K on the clock, with Enkei RS5, eibach springs and Magnaflow catback exhaust for 5900$. It does, however, need new front brakes, new front tires and an allignment.

Its an ok deal. Check the kBB value first. You have to factor the money and time it's gonna take to fix it. It's an 11 year old car. try to negotiate to 2800. Just bring cash and say here i got 2800 do you want it or not?

try and talk it down to 2800...

slotted cross drilled rotors (no brand name..got mine for 60) - 60-100$
Knock sensor - 60$ (if GD is still going) - 80
rear brakes (PBR group deal) - 44-55$ (shipping included)
i got a used axle for - 75$ believe it was carparts.com
and not sure what the bearings will run you, but last i looked at full kits (for squeeking) was like 30$

^ Roughly 340$ in parts all of which you should be able to do on your own besides axle (read its a pain in the ***)
