Need an easy way to remove stock exhaust tip

There's a 4" long metal exhaust tip on my 9 I30 that I would like to replace with a bigger and shinier chrome tip.

From what I can see, the stock tip seems to be held onto the tailpipe by virtue of two wide, metal flanges on the inside.

Can someone suggest an easy way to remove the stock tip w/o resorting to sawing it off?

Thanks!

IIRC there is a procedure in the FSM using a rubber mallet.

I was able to pull mine out in less than 5 minutes with a pair of good pliers and some twisting.

To hit what, and in which direction?

Please explain your procedure a little bit further, like did you use the pliers to pry it open at the seam? Did you use the pliers to pull it towards you and away from the muffler?

I forgot to mention the following:
  1. I have a chronic neck injury that limits what I can physically do
  2. Using a pliers to twist an immobile object will make my neck injury worse.

Now, knocking it off with a rubber mallet would be less stressful on my neck, but i wonder if there are a few, other tricks to doing it that will not mess me up more than I am now.

Of course, I could ask someone else to do it, too.

I did pry it open at the seam a bit. You don't have to go under the car or anything. Go directly behind it and pull it towards you in a side to side twisting motion. You have to use your strength, if you are a weakling, get someone who is strong to do it. Its no big deal, just give it a try, if you can't get it just take it to an exhaust shop or something.

I usually take a piece of 2x4 and use a hammer to bang it out. hitting from the inside - out.

Yep, I bought a tip and still could not get the tip off my 97SE. Darn strong.... I am afraid that if I keep going, the whole muffler would fall......

I think I bent mine with a long flat blade screw driver while twisting to remove it.

I succeeded in knocking it off with a rubber mallet.

Thanks for all the great ideas, though.

This is easy to do:

1. Dispite the fact a chrome tip makes you look gay and let's face it, everyone can f*cking tell you're a poser when you put one on, go ahead and hack saw your tip off (pun intended)

2. Get a life.

And that's it. Yippee! You too can add 100 punds of crap to your car to make it look like it would if you have invested that f*cking money in a Altima to begin with!

Didn't the maxima come from the factory with a chrome tip or am I missing something here? It looks like mine would've been chrome if wasn't 10 yrs old it looks to be silver now. So I guess same thing goes when you wash your car you look gay when your car is clean and you become a poser because your car looks almost like its new. Its not like they're asking how to put on altezzas and nismo weapon type R body kits. Almost every car comes with chrome tips nowadays.

Mine didn't come with a chrome tip and personally if car's come with chrome tips, and I have seen a few, they still look gay. It's so freaking obvious because the contrast between the chrome and the regular metal is glaring.

It's like having dual exhaust with dual mufflers but only one pipe running back from your engine.

All I'm asking is that you THINK people.

The same can be said for valve covers, air intakes, and anything else shiny used to mod a car.

But, actually, exhaust tips do serve a purpose (other than looking gay to some people) -- they modify the tone of the exhaust -- which is why I'm changing mine.

I'm trying to match the color of my original exhaust pipe, but I cannot seem to find many tips in rust.

Now, that ugly OEM tip that I hammered off did nothing beyond looking like a 3" exhaust pipe -- because of its size and because the end of it was even with the 2" pipe.

yea, the fact you can clearly see the dinky tail pipe inside the oem tip makes it much more gay than any aftermarket tip
