steering issue?

hey i got a 97 max and my question basically is this is there any way to make the steering wheel stiffer (harder to turn). mine feels really loose (if your doing like 60 on a straight line u can move it back and forth approximately 1/4-1/2 inch without making the car move from a straight line). also the wheel shakes alittle. any sugggestions? i was told i could just tighten something and that should help but the question is what?

There is nothing to tighten that will remove play. You have a bad outer tie rod, inner tie rod, or steering rack.

If you tighten the pinion tension nut on the steering rack, you will increase the overall resistance to turning the wheel. However, that doesn't remove play.

It could be any of them. A good alignment tech/mechanic should be able to pinpoint the problem.

Those are both splined connections. If they were loose you'd feel a nasty grinding sound and the wheels wouldn't turn.
