My 97 makes very similiar noises. Especially in a rainy morning. I could not really get it fixed becuase all those three times I took it to a mechanic, it got scared and stopped making that. Maybe I should just leave the car with him.

My car has been sitting for almost 20 hours. It's been pretty cold and rainy. I tried to get a video of the noise, but my digital camera didn't pick it up. You wouldn't be able to hear it if I uploaded it to the computer. But, I did hear it when I just started my car.

I too have the same noise on my 97 SE stick with 160K. I don't have a fool proof answer to this issue, but I'll tell you about my own observations.

As with others, it only occurs in the morning after the car has sat overnight. Fine, nothing new. But today the car was off, I had the radio going at a decent volume for quite a while while I was working on it; no worries, I've got a red top. When I went to start it I got the same noise. But after driving for a while and having it reach normal temp I noticed the noise was still there. I also noticed another noise - alternator whine - this most likely because it was charging my battery from playing the radio for so long. This mysterious noise was accompanied by a noticeably higher vibration in my pedals than normal. The last time I noticed this vibration was before I replaced my alternator. I noticed that when I played certain amplifier-taxing songs LOUD that this vibration would pop up. Now I'm thinking that its possibly an alternator bearing. My alternator is quite new and shouldn't be making these kinds of noises, but perhaps its par for the course and we shouldn't worry about it. The fact that this occurs after the car's been sitting overnight makes me think that the overnight drain on the battery, albeit ever so slight, causes the alternator to work a tiny bit harder in the morning to get it up to a full charge.

Like I said, nothing conclusive but thats just my observations.

I have a new alternator. It made the noise before and after I replaced it. But I like your reasoning. I think I might have a drain somewhere which causes the alternator to work even harder????

Man that sucks, I have this same noise and when I lifted the hood I couldn't hear it in the engine bay. I assumed it was coming from the alternator since the noise would get louder after turning on my headlights and fog lights. When I turn the lights off the noise would quite down. This noise started for me about 2 months ago.

I think its import to re-iterate.. When this occurs in my car, the pedals vibrate, all 3 of them. Yet the gas pedal seems to do it the worst as if a direct link to the vibration, to me that indicates the firewall.

If you don't have the vibration/groaning at the same time you most likely have a different problem all together.

I would more or less rule out any belt driven accessory in this case.

Yeah my pedal vibrates when the noise is occuring. My car will be in my garage for like a week, I wonder how it will start up...

Do any of you guys have aftermarket y-pipes?? It sounds like the bees-in-a-can noise to me due to a bad flex pipe.

The sound that is troubling is nothing remotely close to that of a bees in a can noise. It sounds nothing like that. Plus, I do not have an aftermarket y-pipe.
