I dont know what it is, but no one can ever get my car started, they turn the key and the lights come on and thats it. I give it a turn and VROOOM it always cranks on, no tricks about it, but who ever tries to start my car never can, what the hell can it be, they turn the key and nothing happends but for me she always cranks over. No trick to it, I dunno.

same thing with mine, except it won't start for me either.
some times it starts right away, sometimes on the 3rd try, and sometimes on the 20th. Once I was sitting there for like 20 mins trying to start it. WTF?

Will the ignition switch fix this?

If you have a CEL, check the code(s). Might be CPS or ECTS. Typically when none of those common trouble starting codes do not show, it's most likely your ignition switch.

thanks.
I don't have the CEL on, but can you tell me how to see if I have any trouble codes. Can I do it by turning the key a few times, like on other cars?

And since its probobly the ignition switch, I'm going to replace it. Is there a how-to anywhere or can someone give some tips on doing it.

your problem will worsen as time goes by. I was the only one who could start my car too...until the ignition switch wears out further. It's a good sign to replace it now. Under 30 bux...it's worth it.

you need a long phillip screw driver and a very small and short phillip. Take the Steering cover off with the screw driver. take the plastic cover off, the part the your knee would touch if you are sitting up against it (there are two bolts at the bottom end and the rest are plugs..just tug and pull). Take the metal bracket off under the steering column (no difficult hear).

Just behind the signal thingamajig is your ignition switch. There are two tiny screws holding it. WARNNING...unplug the connecting first before you try to unscrew it off....you might accidentally create a huge sparks. Unplug the connection...unscrew the two tiny goldish screws and install in reverse.

get it here...just buy the airtek .it's 23 dollars.

you can fix it without buying this..but why bother. what you can do is sand the holes a bit. put it back in and hold and twist. Screw it tight to keep position. The reason is... most failure are due to the a small wear in the plastic. I don't recommend it... the screw will not keep it's hold from usage and wear and tear form tempturature changes and what not.

here's how it looks just in case you want to buy it from pepboyz. http://www.rockauto.com/ref/Airtex/D...tml?1S6365.jpg

btw, rock auto is not the lowest price for most things...for some reason, this switch is cheapest from them.

DanGK,

have you tried testing the relay? I know relays rarely go bad...but I think there are three relays next to the fuse box driver side... not the ones on the engine bay. You'll hear it click when you try to start it...it's easier to access it if you remove the plastic cover as mentioned above..only two bolts.

Also, check the battery and it's connection...The battery may not have enough juice to crank the starter. Good luck and my 15th post!!

All 3 relays click. I took them out and put them back in and the car stars better, but it still does't always start on the first try.
How can I tell if the relays are bad?
Do I need to replace all of them?

well, if it's not the dieing battery, relay, or ignition switch....time to take out the starter and get it tested at your local napa or whatever. It may be on it's way out.

remove the intake mast and you'll see the starter. there are two bolts holding the starter.

Olezhka, you have to use the ohm meter to test it. You only need to replace the bad one. Again, relay rarely fail...but who knows. I'd get that starter tested. Did you change your ignition switch?

I will give that a try. How did you clean the contacts, did you take off the plastic cover on them or?

Saturday when I was putting new ignition switch in I found this. I took apart the panels and everything, unplugged the round part from the steering column (unscrewed it) then unplugged the harness. And then there were 2 wires going deep down towards the engine. I was like wtf. My new ignition switch is just the round part and wires go straight to the connector. The one that was on there is still there since the wires go from middle of ignition switch (2 wires) somewher deep down. So I left it there hanging, hooked up new switch and it starts fine (still takes few tries) so I dont know what those 2 wires were for.. Any ideas?

Is it necessary to disconnect the battery before touching the ignition switch? I have the same problemfor almost 3 years now .I mean other people including my mech can't start it. You really have to turn the key all the way down. Most of the time (maybe 80%) I only try it once and it starts right away.
