Yeah, that was a pain to remove. You need to get a swivel wrench to be able to get the screw from the bottom...a little jiggling and cussing should loosen it up. I don't think that has anything to do with the Knock sensor, but only with starting the car.
I went to sears and I think it was 10 or 12mm wrench that can be angled 180 degrees.

I know this is an old thread, but I just repalced mine about 15 min ago. For me the hard part wasn't getting the EGRC Solenoid off, the hard part was getting the three vaccuum hoses off.
I used a small 1/4in ratchet (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00944812000P) and a 1/4in 10mm socket to get it off. By sticking the handle of the ratchet pointing towards the V6 valley, you'll have enough room to move the handle back and forth to loosin the 10mm nut holding the EGRC Solenoid in place. I just used it to break the nut free, then used my fingers to take the nut off. Now on to resetting the ECU to get the wonderful check engine light off...
