I need a new transmission and was wondering if a 5-spd from a 2000 5-spd max would fit in my 1995 gxe 5-speed without any modifications, are their any differences? Thanks.....

Yes, the shifter position will change slightly.

I'm pretty sure this is covered in the FAQ's. It will fit but you need different axles and a 4th gen VSS.

it will go in without any issues except the shifter position changing, like the other guy said. you don't need new axles and you don't need to change the VSS.

Well there is an image of someone installing a 2001 AE (LSD) transmission. First gear looks like neutral and 2nd looks like it is laying down on the floor. In terms of being installed, it is 100% compatible and will fit. It just has visual problems . Has anyone on the forum found a way to change the position of the shifter after installing a 2000-2001 transmission?

I am 80% sure that not all 2001 are LSD.

a short throw shifter moves the shifter back forward. so 5th gen trans + STS = stock 4th gen shifter position.

My 01 tranny did not have a VSS, there was a blank cover for the hole. I just installed my original one. Youll need to swap the reverse neutral safety switch, or wiring, since yours is the older one.

is there any advantage in having a 00-01 5spd in a 4th gen? sorry if this has been covered before...been away for awhile.

I apologize if I may have gave false info. But it says in the 4th gen faqs that the axles and vss must be replaced.

hmmm, thats not entirely true. It been proven that the pass axle does not need to be changed. When using an LSD tranny the driver axle does need to be replaced. I honestly doubt the open diff axles differ between 4th and 5th gens.

I think they might have a tighter clutch in them. Or at least in the 01.

Unfortunately there's some bad info in the stickies these days. That post is inaccurate - I've done the swap myself on my car. The only time you have to worry about axles is if you are putting in a transmission in your car that has a different differential type than what is currently in it - regardless of what year it s. you only have to change the driver's side axle when you do that (though a couple people have posted that they had to change both which is very strange because I've swapped multiple open diff and VLSD transmissions into my turbo car and never had to change the passenger side axle.)

Thanks for clearing that up. I was planning on finding an LSD and swapping it in eventually.
