99 maxima SE won't take gas
MY friend has a 99 maxima SE. HE brought it to the dealer because he can only put about 1 gallon of gas in the tank and then the pump stops and it overflows. Took it to the dealer and they changed the evap canister and the problem still exists. Charged him $700 just for that and to purge the system. Even though I think they didn't do anything. Now the car is back at the dealer......I've read the stickies and can't find any clue as to what might be causing the car to not take gas. Does any one have ANY IDEA what the problem might be. Thanks in advance for any help.

Car will drive till it runs out off gas I suppose. The whole thing is that it won't take any gas at all and there is only 1/4 tank of gas in the tank. When you put the pump in it takes about 1 gallon.......then the pump stops and if you try to continue filling it up the gas spills out. The dealer is charging another $700 to change the gas tank now.....thats $1400 ($700 for the evap canister which was already changed) so far and I honestly don't think that is the problem.....I remember others having the same problem and it was something not too difficult to replace. ANY HELP is appreciated. Thanks guys.

your friend has cause for getting his money back, he paid them to fix this problem and they still havent, therefore they HAVE to fix it or they are liable for it. your friend cant be serious about giving them another 700 for the same issue..its the dealers fault in the first place..

I had the same thing happen, I ended up ripping off one of the old clamps off of the rubber hose near the tank and I pulled the hose off looking for an obstruction and stuck a magnet down there. I found nothing and the problem just went away. Crazy.

Hey guys sorry I've been away at work for a few days. Haven't spoken to my friend but when I do I'll give you guys an update as to what the problem was just in case it happens to anyone else. I also think he's getting screwed royally but he's too timid of a guy to say anything about it even though I told him to take it to another dealer. Last I heard they were going to change his entire tank....we will see what happens.

Why would it be the tank? Don't let him give that dealer any more $$$. Sound like an obstruction or possibly a bad guage/sender. If he lets it sit a few seconds can he slowly add more gas? If so the gas is draining past an obstruction. I do NOT think the tank is at fault. Get the previous money back from that dealer. Paul

Ok my friend got shafted......they replaced his entire gas tank and it fixed the problem. $700 for the tank + the $700 he spent b4 when they replaced the evap canister and some other stuff......can we say r*ped!!!! The dealer told him he has to pay simply because its a part of the trial and error process for diagnostics. HE's an idiot for agreeing to that but whatever....in any event changing his tank solved the problem.
