So I called Checker to see if they had any remanufactured starters for sale for a 96. They said they have two models. An early (8 teeth) and a late (10 teeth). The employee couldn't tell me which one I needed and I haven't taken a look at my starter yet. Any idea which I need or how to tell? Thanks

 

I'm pretty sure you'll have to pull it and count the teeth. Here are some pics:
