VSS and TCM....how do i change them?

i have a code for TCM, its 0504, which says that there is a problem with Automatic Transmission Communications line. it also has a code for the VSS, i though that it was that thing in the tranny towards the back..... ok, i really dont know what the TCM is... i think the VSS is that black thing in the back of the tranny somewhere under the EGR valve looking down betweeen the firewall and the TB..... i went to the junk yard for that part and i just cant seem to pull it out..... i took off the top but the part down in the tranny wont move.... what do i do, does anyone have any experience with either of those?

The VSS is teh vehicle speed sensor, it is located on the back of the trans above the differential. The TCM is the transmission control module, and if you are getting a communication error, the problem probably isn't the module. If the TCm is having communications faults, than that is probably the source of teh VSS. The TCm recieves the signal from the VSS to control trans shifting and other commands, the signal is also sent to the ABS, the ECM and the instrument panel. Usually the signal is first sent to the TCM, so if there is a communications fault, that will trip the other code. Get a good schematic and spend some time diagnosing the communications bus, you will probably find a bad connection or wire. Don't get me wrong, the TCM can go bad, but check the basics first to avoind spending the money in vein. Good luck
