Exhaust system

I know my precats are questionable, as they have the 'rattle'. My muffler has lost at least one wrap layer now, so it will be time to replace soon. I don't think I want to go the y-pipe route, but want some more performance. Will the precats hammer my main cat if they plug ? Are pre cat replacements available at reasonable cost ? Car sees a fair amount of moisture (WA . state)

So you want performance and you say you don't want to go y-pipe? Y-pipe is an extra 20hp (approx) Why would you not want a y? And what precat are you talking about?

I was thinking the same thing, why don't you want a y pipe? the difference is def. noticeable. if you're worried about it being too loud, you shouldn't be. I added a Budget y pipe and even threw in a high flow cat, kept the stock b pipe, resonator and muffler, the car still sounds stock and has much more power. You really have nothing to lose by adding a y pipe, esp. if your precats are bad.

I dont think it's worth doing any performance mods if you wont get a y pipe. Why waste money on more stuff when you could add 20 right away? I feel stupid as is doing my 00vi before the y-pipe, but o'well it'll come in a few months. Almost like when I saw a guy on cardomain in the process of adding turbo to his max and he was selling his y for more money.....turbo the car with a stock exhaust? Smart huh? lol

hahah nice.
yeah definatley get a ypipe they dont have precats, therefor you dont need to worry about the two precats on the stock pipe. i think everyone just about agrees that y-pipe is the 1st or easiest mod to do. so do it! im hopefully getting one soon.

i have a quick question related to the y-pipe and the cat. right after i got my y-pipe installed and took off i noticed a rattle sound right around the cat area, it sounded like a bolt being rattled around in the sat housing... needless to say i was alittle freaked. it has since never happened again, but what was it??? i know it wasnt a bolt because i helped my mechanic install it and know for sure it was clear of any debris before install.

Could have been anything stuck up there. It doesnt do it now, the pipe works fine, so don't worry about it.

Yeah until his car explodes.. Compliments of Nissan. One day the problem is there and then you don't notice anything for a while and then all of a sudden it ends you.

J/K, my car has had some strange noises and none seemed to result in harm. "Odd," some would say.

The y pipe does have precats on it. The after market y pipes dont have those which is what makes them flow better and add that est. 20 hp. and i dont think you can just replace the pre cats.

Thanks for the good advice- looks like the budget y pipe and then look at a good muffler in the spring.

the main cat is still there so you will only pollute for a little while unlike the diesel trucks runnin around these days. if your so concerned with polluting 4th gens you should go big and take on nascar emissions lol j/k.

I can't speak for the stillen, but... even with the addition of a warpspeed high flow cat, my exhaust basically sounds stock. I still ahve the stock B pipe, resonator and muffler. I have a Budget Y, but i imagine the tone would be more or less the same regardless of manufacturer. It's a little more deep when cruising btwn 1500 and ~2X00 RPM's, but it's barely noticeable. Also, the deeper tone might even be because of the high flow cat. But if you can get that for $100 I would def. give it a shot

He could not use the aftermarket y anyway with a turbo setup. Most turbo setups use a reverse y that feeds the exhaust back to the engine bay where the turbo is mounted and then back out of the engine bay to the b/muffler. If you look at any of the possible places to put a turbo it would make sense.

The rattle could also be the flex section.
