Rpm jump at start-up and ticking noise

My 99 max surges to a little over 2k on start up and then falls to 1500 rpm and slowly drops from there. I've cleaned the TB and IACV and things didn't improve. Now that it's really cold outside, I don't like this. My car also made a loud ticking noise at start-up (for about 5-10 seconds). Any suggestions? I use Mobil 5w-30.

Isn't the RPMs like that suppose to be normal?

for the ticking, try and Autp-rx treatment. www.auto-rx.com for the RPM surge, like the other poster said it is normal (not sure about 2k. never really looked at my numbers).

2000 is def. high,

for this cold weather as soon as i startup, it jumps to about 700-800rpm for 1-2secs, then drops back down to 600

then this is NOT a cold startup. i dont know of any car that does not idle high when cold and drop as it warms up (and going from 700-800rpms is not a drop especially since you cant even read the numbers in that increment). just started mine and it was up at 1500. prob would have been higher if i didnt auto-rx it, clean the tb etc and wasnt using pure synthetic oil. try the auto-rx and switch to castrol 0w30 or the moil 1 equivalent. more flow during cold starts and same protection at high temperature.

2k is fine...that's about where mine is when i start her up. Never really had it go past that and the lowest i've had on a cold start is around 14-1500. It all depends on how cold it is and how long the car has been sitting. I mean NY is damn cold yo!

I have a problem with sometimes I will park the car and go in somewhere for a few min and then come back outside and start the car. Remember the car is warm and the RPMs shoot up to 2500 and will sit there for like 10 secs and then slowly drop down. I just cleaned my TB the other day

my car had this exact same problem....

When the engine is warm, the ECU is reading it is cold (I believe). I was thinking coolant temp sensor, but I switched mine with one from my parts car, and cleaned my IACV and still nothing.

I have a feeling it's still the coolant temp sensor though, maybe another temp sensor, no idea

This all started after I put my popcharger in/cleaned my TB.

here is a stupid question:

when you cleaned the TB i am sure some antifreeze leaked out. dod you get all of the air out of the system?

why would antifreeze leak out on the TB cleaning? I didn't remove it from the IF?

with a thorough cleaning of the throttle body you revome it from the plenum and clean the whole thing. the hoses that connect to the bottom carry coolant.

Very possible that your 5-10 second ticking issue could be your timing chain tensioner. If so, it is about a $55 / 45 minute fix. Search the forum for the how to threads on this.

Mine does the same thing when cold. Not sure about the ticking noise tho cuz my doesn't do that.

I think the surging to 2k then dropping on startup is normal tho. Mine has done that since I bought it almost 2 yrs ago.

for the ticking, switch to GC or M1 0w30. a dirty motor + thicker oil can lead to that.

Ticking is probably lifter tick.

As for the startup - mine is the same but it doesn't stay at 2K - it starts and then immediately drops down.

What does that have to do with it aside from the fact it never gets below 32F where I live?

Mine does the same thing as described here but DOES NOT immediately drop down.

Takes a while..maybe 2-3+ min.

It used to do it faster. Does the TPS sensor have anything to do with it? Say if you removed it when cleaning the TB and just placed it back without adjusting or placing it correctly?

Ticking

Well, no more ticking. I think the ticking noise was caused by me starting the car and pulling it into the garage (didn't let it warm up). The car sat for several days and when I started it made the noise.
I guess the engine rev at start up is normal but would still like to adjust something to get this down. Just seems that 2K at start up when the most wear on the engine occurs should not be normal.

mine doesn't always rev up to 2k...

If they engine is a little warm it might only go up to 2k, sit there for about 10 seconds then drop down abruptly.

But if the engine is at operation Temp when i start the car the rpms will jump as high as like 3.5k and stay they for almost a minute then abruptly just drop down to idle.

Any suggestions?

My car just started jumping to a higher RPM range immediately after start-up. It now goes over 2500 RPM sometimes and then comes back down to the normal 650-700 range. It also seems to take longer to get to normal than it did before it started jumping up to 2500. The weather this year has been much warmer than normal, so I would expect that it should not be going to 2500 if it never has in the past, when it's been much colder.

I have a '95 SE and I've done a lot of maintenance work in the past 6 months to get everything in top operating order. I'm hoping it is something I can easily fix.

What are some things I should look at? I know that when I had my lower radiator support fixed 6 weeks ago, the body shop drained the coolant and discharged/recharged the AC system.

Could there be bubbles in the coolant now? What about the IAT sensor? I think the one in my car is the original. Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance for any/all suggestions!

Every car might be different but i'd check the engine oil level and depending on what grade of oil you use might be related to that ticking.Timing chain is my guess

I guess the RPM jumping up upon start-up was an intermittent thing. It happened over a couple weeks but hasn't happened much at all since then. I'm not going to worry about it unless it becomes a regular issue.
