Diagnosis Request: Drivetrain Sound and Vibration Through Gas Pedal

PROBLEM: My 1997 I30t (175K miles) has a vibration that is audible from the interior and felt through the gas pedal when driving. In particular, the sound is not a "click" like worn CV shafts. It increases in intensity as my speed increases but it nearly ceases when I harder into turn right hand turns.

ITEMS REPLACED "RECENTLY:" I replaced the CV shafts 6 months ago with NAPA re-grinds and replaced the front brake pads yesterday. Wheel bearings have not been replaced, CV boots show no sign of damage, and all bushings on suspension look fine (all Energy Suspension replacements for '97 Maxima 1 year ago) as do the shock mounts (no play).

QUESTIONS: Is this typical of a wheel bearing problem? Bad re-ground CVs (no clue what the life expectancy is on a NAPA re-grind; yes, I know. Buy some Raxles. I intend to Raxle after all else is checked and eliminated from possibility.)

What can you suggest I check/replace (or think the problem is)?

Thank you .Orgers! - Slopster

sounds like the wheel bearing. see how much play you get when you shake the spindle without the tire and rotor on....if you have too much play than it needs to be replaced...unless you have a press lying around you will have to take it to the shop. had to replace mine on my 96 max

Sorry KingMax.

The best way I can describe the sound is a sound with pitch, tone, and intensity varying with the car speed. To me, it sounds similar to the sound a playing card makes when flapping on bicycle spokes.

Similar to a Gieger counter but not a formal "click" sound (as with CV shafts).

I'll pull the front tires/rotors tonight and take a look. I have the Nissan Service Repair manual on CD so I am going to see what it says regarding the wheel bearings as well. Thanks deadmax96.

Anyone else have other possibilities or items to check?

Take it to a good alignment shop and pay them for a 30min diagnosis.

I suspect it might be the wheel bearings, but an experienced mechanic can give a real diagnosis.
