did buget do me wrong?
so my budget stainless steel y-pipe arived today and i opened the box and it looks like it is the aluminized one. i was expecting a shiny polished y-pipe and this is what i got:
for those of you who have the budget ss y-pipe is this how it looks? bc the pic on their website looks like this
http://thewrx.netfirms.com/lss/syste...ges/fpipe4.jpg
and this is the aluminized one:
http://thewrx.netfirms.com/lss/syste...ges/fpipe1.gif
which looks just like what i got. im kinda pissed cuz not only did they possibly send me the wrong thing but i also ordered the ss b-pipe too, which wasnt shipped with the y-pipe, im still waiting on that one. if anyone can tell me for sure if i got ripped that would be great so i can start going through the process of returning this thing

magnets do not stick to most stainless, and a magnet will stick to aluminized steel. but I'm telling you, if you knew what stainless looked and felt like you would be able to tell. The picture looks like stainless to me. Aluminized will look lighter in color.

AFAIK all the budget SS pipes are now polished and the aluminized ones are the only ones not polished. They didnt give me an option when I bought mine it was all sent polished for the same price and i was expecting a black one like they used to have.\
This is what they sent me way back when

The magnet test can be a little misleading on materials that have undergone significant cold work (ie. rolling, bending, etc.)
SS pipes are always fabricated from 300 series stainless steels which in stock form are negligibly magnetic. However when rolled or drawn into a pipe form and then bent, phase transformations will occur which cause the material to gain magnetic properties. These will be very weak compared to those of a regular carbon steel.
The flanges are generally always made from mild steel. Compare the magnet pull between the flange and a section in the middle of the pipe.
Also the type and grade of material is stamped every few feet along the raw pipe material when it is produced at the mill. I know when I got my Cattman SS y-pipe about 4 years ago, the mill stamp was clearly visible.

When I ordered mine, I spoke with Jody & asked her if the deal was for a polished y, & the answer was no. Just for the un-polished, that's why they had a special. Next time you order something, ask about it first!!!
Plus, it's under your car, so why does it matter?
Are you gonna put it up on a lift and show everyone.

You cannot increase the strength of an austenitic SS through heat treating.
No material should be considered "crappy", only misapplied for a given application.

like i said, it matters to me. i dont want my bpipe to be shiny and my ypipe look like crap, even if no one sees it. ill know its there. most people here can feel me because you know how **** you can get about somthing on your car that someone will probably never notice like a small scratch somewhere or somthing of that nature. well at least me anyway. and true i should have asked if it was polished before i bought it but i thought that was a given when it said stainless steel. they dont have an option on their site to buy an unpolished ss ypipe, so i didnt think mine would come unpolished.
but more importantly than me venting is that i am starting to suspect it isnt stainless at all. i put a magnet on the flanges and it stuck, but it wouldnt stick to the piping anywhere. i understand this magnet trick might not be accurate, but i want to be sure its stainless. i can live with the unpolished pipe, i just dont want to be ripped off.

Do you even know what stainless steel looks like?
Obviously not!
My b-pipe isn't polished, but the Magnaflow resonator is.
Just call up and speak with Jody, explain your dilemma to her.

^ and you got it from budget? i just got this tonight so calling budget wiill be the first thing i do tomorrow. i just hope this thread will serve as a warning to those who ordered their y pipe and are expecting a polished one. i sure wish i had known. i will likely end up using this one anyway, its going to do the same thing wether or not its shiny or dull, but i would have been happier if it was shiny.

After u'r drive it around for a bit, the polish won't be soo shiny.
I don't get why the polish matters, I bought a used cattman SS y-pipe off a TMEC member, it was far from polished... I just used exhaust wrap on it.
Besides if u wrap the y-pipe u will get a slight performance boost from hotter exhaust gasses, and especially if u use a HAI, Shortram, or Popcharger style intake because of the lower engine bay temp.
Polished... waste of time IMO
DEI exhuast wrap... FTW

Yes, yours is also stainless.
As for the test pipe

Mine's not a budget, but it's a XS Power/SSAutoChrome (a la ebay) one...
and it's highly polished stainless. Fits like a dream, DEFINITE power increase. Worthwhile purchase. As soon as I get some free time, I'll put the headers on... however, being a chef during holiday season = 90+ hour weeks.
