Auto Tranny died

I have a 97 se auto and i've been having rough shifts and last week when I was driving back to la from san diego everything was ok untill i got off the freeway. i got off and was waiting on a red light and it was on a hill. once I let go of the brake, the car startted rolling back and when I would step on the gas the rpm's would go up and nothing. then the car would jerk and drive.
later that day the car started making a loud noise when i would put it into drive.

I'm guessing the tranny is f***** up.
what should i do now?
rebuild?
get a used one?
new one?
anyone know how much it would cost?

to get it rebuild around here it'll run u $1k & up from AAMCO, and a used one would be around $600-$700? and i believe a new one would run you up and around $1700?

First, I am assuming that you didn't bump your gear selector into neutral at the light. Now don't fret just yet. Sometimes these things are "just" the gear selector or linkage on top of the transmission. Take it to a reputable tranny shop for diagnosis to be sure. -sloppy

I'd go 5speed if I could. I wouldn't trust anyone doing it but myself and I have no room to do it. Also I only have 2 grand right now and I was thinking of getting tires for my 18's and the stillen body kit, but now I have to fix the tranny.

By the way, should I rebuild the tranny or save up for a new one?
I have never dealt with auto's before and I don't know if the rebuild is gona last.
I wouldn't get a used one, because God knows how the previous driver drove the car.

how many miles you have on car and have you been doing transmission service on recommended intervals. i doubt that you ever had a transmission flushed. anyway i believe the new tranny would be 3 times more than what a rebuild one cost. if you planning to keep the car for many years then go for new one if you decide to sell the car in future then get the rebuild one. afterall rebuild tranny does come with warranty. make sure you find a reputable tranny shop that provides the warranty on rebuild transmission. as you said you got 2 grand i would advice that you fix your tranny problem first and then decide about rims and tires. afterall you'll be driving a car that has a rebuild tranny so theres no point of putting more money into a car that already has a rebuild tranny. just sell it and get 5speed 5th gen.

so rebuild tranny's are bad?
I thought that a rebuild tranny is almost like a new one.

rebuilts can be good or bad. It really depends on the person doing the rebuild.

if the price of a rebuild is getter than a junkyard tranny, go with the rebuild.

Tough luck Teska! Just look for a junkyard one. I've seen people onthis forum get trannies with 50K miles on 'em for like $500 (doesn't mean that you'll get that lucky though)

when mine went AAMCO quoted me $2300 to fix it. if i were the one paying for it i would have got a low mileage tranny from the jankyard and tossed it up there. but since the car is part my parents, they didnt trust that method so it was rebuilt at a smaller local shop, and it still cost about $2000. ide still say to go witha junkyard tranny if you have time to put it in.

get it rebuild which will atleast last you for another 50k to 80k depending on tranny servicing. you car already has 95k so i dont think you would keep the car till 200k. and with your search of finding a used one will take you long time. if i were you i would either get it rebuild or buy the brand new one. the bottom line is: you cant trust the used tranny out there. i know a shop in anaheim on euclid and oragethorpe where they rebuild the transmission for cheaper rates. so think twice before you decide to go for used one.
