Steering Wheel Cover
Steering Wheel Cover
I'm in need of a new steering wheel cover. Currently I have an autozone one which tightens with a string, and it feels very bulky. I've heard that you should first take off the original cover, and then put on the new one in its place... Any suggestions?

Damn, those belong on old american cars back in the 80's when they used very skinny steering wheels. But yeah, wheelskin is probably your best bet unless you want to send your wheel out to have it custom relaced with new leather. I was quoted 250-300 bucks from a local upholsery shop. Apparently they send it out to somewhere in LA ,Ca to have it done with a 4-5 day turnaround time.
I myself am planning to buy a used SE steering wheel and carefully cut the leather sticthing off. I'm gonna use the old leather as a template to cut a new leather skin. Luckily for me my sister owns a professional sewing machine. I am going to use that to put sticthing holes into the new skin. Only problem is that I don't know where to buy some wax sticthings.

i JUST BOUGHT a wheelskins skin for my 98 wheel but i ordered the wrong size and its not enough to go around the thickness of the wheel. I cut off most of the OEM leather skin except where it goes towards the center on the arms because the generic circular shape of the Wheelskins doesnt cover all of that and it would look like ****.
generic products suck but if they sold OEM skin replacements it looks like it would be HARD to sew on with so many holes and such small thread.
Had a leather wheel repaired this way: Wadh, dry. and Lightly sand the wheel. Get as much of the gloss finish off as you can but not to worry, just make sure all is buffed leather, dull. Now at Autozone, there is a spray paint, forget the name, especially for flex applications such as vinyl. Get a can and spray your wheel. It looks pretty good. I would say the $20 price of the can does a $500 value add to your ride. Got to have an untorn wheel to start of course.
