Climate control light

Does anyone know which bulb(s) are behind the climate control panel? The buttons dont light up which is annoying. Also, how do I change the bulbs? Thanks

It is annoying as hell to have to turn the interior light on to see how to adjust the controls. Which LED's and how difficult is the installation? I already have my dash apart to paint it so I'm half way home.

wat bulbs are they?

BTW its a bit off topic but, remember you changed your steering for a 97+; besides the steering rack, you dont need anything else right since i heard that 97+ have a solenoid for ps oil pressure?

I have the same problem now.
I replaced my Bose system and after I put everything back together the buttons on climate control don't light up. (They are supposed to light up when you turn the headlights on.
I checked two connectors behind the climate control and they are plugged in.

Then I disconnected the small connector and there was no change, so I guess thats the connector for Buttons Illumination.

Since the buttons were light up before the Bose replacement, I'm not sure that the bulbs are bad now , may be it's a wire or fuse problem ? Also, why all button bulbs are not working (if one is bad the others should work) ?

That's beautiful. Is there a write-up you used to do that? Any info on the bulbs you used?

I don't have the experience with leds, so I wanna replace them with bulbs.

Where can I get the bulbs ? may be there are blue ones ?

Mine blown when I put on my new radio. As matter of fact, I strated a topic on that issue. Three out of four bulbs were dead. They were all hooked up in parallel, and for some reason, they chose to die at the same time. Thanks for those who pointed out the problem for me in the previous discussion.

Tonight, I just finished up replacing them with LEDs. Found the power source and everything works so far.

In "4th gen how to's", there is a post on "how to make climate control light blue". You could take a look at that and get an idea how it'd turn out. I did take some pictures, maybe I could do a rough write-up this weekend.

Those original bulbs emit tint yellow light, but they are all covered up with some kind of blue caps.

That'd be nice. What do you need to do to replace the bulbs with LEDs? I doubt that its plug-n-play?

Bulbs you HAVE to buy from Nissan. I just shoved 5mm leds w/ a resistor in there. I have pics on my desktop so I might make a write up when I go home in a few weeks.

I would put an LED and resistor in that one too.

I called Pinnacle Nissan to ask if they sell bulbs and they said they don't. The guy said - you have to replace the whole climate control unit .

Also he said the problem could be in a fuse

some soldering might be involved......
But it is relatively easy comparing to some other mods that some guys have done.

Soldering I cant do... but I know some people that would help. They arent Nissan guys, however, so any sort of pictures and/or explanations would be appreciated!

Soldering is not difficult. Buy a soldering iron and learn how to do it.

I will go to Strauss or Autozone to get the bulbs. My friend bought them for his camry there.
I would love to install leds but I have no experience.

let us know if you find them tehre because from what i've read in every post, the only place to pick up the correct bulbs for our cars is at the dealership, at about $4 per bulb. if i could get them at strauss it would be great

One other thought.....

When I stopped by Radioshack earlier, I did see bunch of different bulbs they carry. Maybe if you could find the one that fits and doesn't pull more than 70mA at 12V, that might work as well.

I've replaced the OEM bulbs on mine already. It's not hard - you just take the climate unit out and each bulb comes out with a 1/4 turn of the screwdriver.

The bulbs are only $3/ea from Nissan, and if they can't figure out what the part number is, call another dealer. There are 4 if I recall correctly, so for under $15 the problem is solved. Not sure why a person would go to the trouble of LEDs if all they want is working bulbs.

I bought the bulbs from a local stealership today. These mother f####rs charged me $26 ! It's $6 per bulb plus tax.
I installed them and everything works now.
The bulbs covered by blue plastic caps so I tried to remove one cap and see how it looks when it's on. The color was crappy orange/whitish.
So I guess if you could put a different color cap (purple?) you could get blue illumination.

That's good news that they had them in stock. Where'd you go, kings nissan on coney island ave?? man the last time I went there i accidentally passed it straight and ended up on the belt, lol. that place is tough to find, it's kind of hidden under that overpass, i went straight past it and didn't even know, lol.
I did notice that parts from kings nissan cost significantly less than those from queens though (when I needed the EGR solenoid valve). So it was worth the hassle finding it. Anyway, if you could let me know which one you went to, that'd be great

I went to Kings Nissan. Yeah, it's a little tough to find, next time turn from Ave Z on East 14 (I think) and then go on the service road near belt. You can mapquest it
Local dealerships are too expensive. When I need something besides these bulbs I go to Pinnacle nissan online and their prices are very cheap, you don't pay tax and shipping is cheap too.
I ordered Evap canister and fuel cap there and it came in 6 days. It would cost me $30 more in kings nissan. When you call Kings N and ask for a price they tell you $50 for example... and when you come to buy it he checks in a computer and says $65 + tax.....

I will never go to local stealership again

I would prefer not to buy the LEDs online, anyone done this before with LEDs at Radio Shack. I am not sure what specs I need in a LED and resistor. Anyone know?

what value resistor did this guy use in the LED writeup ?

i am guessing something like 550 ohms or 470 ohm, but not sure, i am trying to zoom in on the picture to get the colour code but i cant tel lthe colours apart

He used 560 and the LED is 10000mcd. I don't think radio shack carries a 10000mcd LED any suggestions?

RS charges a lot more for a single LED and not as bright. You don't really need ~10000mcd of LED. Sometimes it might be too bright and it could be annoying while driving. That happened to me on Hazard/Rear Defroster, because those two have LEDs straight aiming at. Not like climate control.

I don't mind paying more at RS. I if I really don't need a ~10000 LED what do you suggest as far as LEDs go? Also what ohm resistor to go with it?

That should be good enough. Please note that the resistors that come with the LEDs usually give you maybe 20mA of current. Although LEDs can take up to ~25mA or even higher, you could always put higher resistance of resistors in to lower the current and LEDs would be happy and live longer.

The Resistors that came with my LEDs were 470ohm, I usually put ~560ohm in, unless I need them to be as bright as possible. For climate control, it's very troublesome to take the whole thing apart to replace one LED later on, so I used 560ohm. For dome light, I used 470 ohm.

One extra bright white LED in RS is as expensive as my 50 pieces with resistors.

You could calculate the resistance you need yourself.
LED would have its working voltage noted on the package (for example, 3.6V). Your car battery is 12V. (12-3.6)/R should be within the range of your LED working current. Say 20mA, (12-3.6)/0.02= 420 ohm, so you can use 470 or next option 560 for lower current.

Radio Shack does carry replacement bulbs for your climate control. They are not exact but they work. The blue rubber caps on the stock bulbs won't fit though. Without them the color is a dirty white. So I would recommend using LEDs. They look a lot better.
