My 1995 GLE has been a gem for nearly 2 yrs. Only persistent problem has been the starter which is slow to disengage the starter drive. At first it would only happen at app 38 degrees and below but now seems to be doing it more often. This is the slight groaning sound which the starter drive emits as it retracts from the flywheel too slowly . I have had the starter out, cleaned and regreased but do you feel replacing the drive return spring might hasten the return of the starter drive and correct the problem. Also, once the engine is warm the starter does not retract slowly. Every other function of the starter is strong but I dont want to damage flywheel. Thanks for any info( I know this is an old topic)

Your observation that the symptom is related to temperature is a valuable clue. It suggests the grease is stiff at low temperatures and this hinders more than it helps the starter to work properly. I suggest you repeat the clean and lube process but use a thin grease. Ordinary grease-gun chassis grease should be suitable.
