You're a lost soul.

CAN = Controller Area Network

The pedal deal was because it was so sensitive it would DS(downshift) even with the slightest pressure.

Actually, I do that, too. I use my O/D like a manumatic when I want to control the downshifts from 4th...like turning it off when I want to downshift into 3rd without having to give it any pedal, or if I want to go from 4th to 2nd (actually 3rd to 2nd) without having to give it a lot of pedal (if I were still in 4th).

Of course, if I REALLY want to be sure of being in 1st gear at a stop sign, I'll put it into 1st.

IIRC the max was designed to learn behavior right? After you drive a certain way for a while the car adapts itself that way. Idk if that's on all cars or just the max, not something I've ever looked into. But I've never heard of it being able to reset itself by pushing in the gas pedal. Someone test it out.

Having the battery disconnected for a long time resets both the ECU and TCU as I found myself having to teach my tranny all over again.

BTW, the term, "drive by wire," usually refers to electronic throttles as opposed to a cable system. Last time I looked, we had a metal cable running between the pedal and TB. However, some near-future cars will also control the steering electronically as well. I personally would not call the 4th Gen a "Drive by wire" vehicle

4th Gen trannies were never a bright spot.
I'm 99% sure that all of our auto's do this. Both of my 4th gens (My first 97 and my current 99) do this. It's the same type of thing like the shimmy our cars develop after alot of miles. It's the nature of the beast.

I can 2nd this. My '98 GXE will do the same. On the topic of the ECU remembering your driving style, I have noticed that after some WOT driving especially on the freeway and then exit right after, the shifts are at higher RPMs than before i started going WOT.

Well, I've been experiencing a lot of what's been discussed here (tranny not downshifting, TC lockup, etc.) and I thought a lot of it was problematic, but what I know isn't right and I need help with is that most of the time, especially when it's still cold, my tranny will skip over second gear. First gear will revv too high and then go straight to third. After the beast warms up, it shifts at a lower rpm, but still straight to third, unless I force it into second by throwing the shifter into the 2 position. Like I have to tell it it's ok to shift into second.

Anybody have any ideas on this? Sorry to revive a dead thread by the way, but any help is appreciated. Thanks.
