Air Filter Question
Went to day to get a new air fitlter. OEM nissan They were out so went to advanedautoparts. They guy was raving about this filter K&N high flow performance air filter. Part #33-2031-2
and how much better is was then anything and it had a 10 year warrenty and all you do it clean it. Just a thought is it worth the $45.00 the nissan part is $8.99 someone can go 5 years replacing a new one for same price.? Just seeing what others have done.

stay away from K&N (or any high flow) air filters. they let too much dirt get through -- that dirt wears away at your valves, pistons, rings, gets into your oil & chews up your bearings, etc. this has been confirmed many many times by used oil analysis. stick with the nissan oily paper, it is a very good filter.

i've been running my K&N about year intill i get my new set-up, no problems, the only thing i know that k&n affects is the maf sensor.....apexi filters are suppose to be better, because they are made of paper kinda like the stock oem filter, but they only make cone.

If you want a waste do the Seafoam or Auto RX treatments, I had no problems or negative effects with my 97 Se when I had a K&N in it. But in the long run everything you're reading in this post is simply someones opinion, for me it was worth the money. You decide how you want to spend it on your car.

I bought my K&N panel filter because I didn't want to keep spending money on new filters because I plan on keeping the car until its end. And I already had the K&N filter cleaner kit from a previous car. So to me, it was worth it.
And no problems with it either.

problems will not happen overnight, it does take some time for the damage to take affect, but i believe this damage is real.
Simple laws of physics, to let more air through, there need to be more microscopic holes, they may be smaller in size and there maybe more of them which is not bad, but there may be less of them but larger in size, which is bad becaue large dust particles would get through the filter.
Stay with paper, better gas mileage and no difference in performance unless u have your exhaust done. its a common fact, the more air u let into the engine the more gas it will spit out to compensate for the combustion process.

Dammit, don't you understand.. Nothing bad is going to happen. READ my post above and if you think a 600hp RB25 sucks in less air and possible debris than the VQ30 you need a reality check.
We periodically rebuild the RB's and SR's we run and let me tell ya, there's nothing wrong with the seals, valves, bearings, pistons. I could go on.. Sure the Nissan filter is probably better than the K&N, but who cares??
Then again apparently you do, but you shouldn't by all means it's really not gonna make that much difference.
Plus, most of us are knocking over 100k miles.. The tolerances are still tight, but.. Anyways I'll leave it at that. It falls on deaf ears anyhow, so.

im am not going to argue, i never took an engine apart and never seen the parts u speak of. i am sure u know what u r talking about.
i guess i should rephrase my post: a K&N will affect gas mileage for sure by lowering it, a paper filter will give better gas mileage.
thats all no more arguing about dirt particles. but i do wanna know what you think about this --> i have read people arguing here that a K&N will change the RPM curve of a given engine by lowering the low power output and by increasing the high power output, do u think this change occurs ?
surely u must have seen the difference in this because u have taken apart different turboed engines or whatever, and seen how different filters affect actual performance (which is what K&N actually claims on their web site a 10-12 HP increase).

for $20 you can have your oil analyzed. it will tell you many things, including how much ingested dirt (silicon) got into your engine through the air filter. high levels of ingested dirt usually correspond to high levels of engine wear (as indicated by high levels of iron, aluminum, lead, etc).
people that run high flow filters such as K&N almost always show much higher levels of silicon, iron, & aluminum in their oil samples vs. those who use a conventional air filter.
so the $100,0000 question is this -- so what?? how does that affect the performance and/or lifespan of the engine?? the answer is..........
(read: I have seen no scientifically significant A/B comparison between identical engines, in identical conditions, that ran K&N and OEM. so it all depends on your view of excess wear metals showing up in your oil. does that bother you?? or not??)

I've been running my KN airextreme for about 30,000kms and had no issues, re-oiled my filter about 3000 kms ago with again no issues. I have the CRC MAF cleaner too which is worth ago if your concerned about airfilter oil getting on MAF.. then again just don't over oil the thing

It truly amazes me how much this debate pops up. A lot of people say "OMG WARNING: THIS THING WILL DESTROY YOUR ENGINE!!!!" and a lot of other people say "OMG I GOT +58279562835 WHP FROM THIS THING!!!!"
While it is true that it is, and I use this expression very loosely, a "high-flow air filter", it doesn't let in much more air than a paper filter at all. www.bobistheoilguy.com, you will see an independent test of this. Between the K&N, paper, and other filters, the differences in air flow and filtration were pretty negligable. Yes, technically, the K&N has better air flow and less filtration, but by hardly even measurable amounts. Everything is a head game, you can take that as OMG DIRTY ENGINE! or OMG MORE HP!, either way, neither is really true. Nothing you are going to feel or see, in gas mileage, wear, or anywhere else. If you're comfortable with disposable paper filters, go with em. If you like the idea of a reusable filter, go with it. But DON'T spend the extra money because you think it gives better mpg and hp, and DON'T deter from it because you're afraid of a dirty engine. I would just say go with what you're comfortable with.

No, I wasn't joking. I want as few restrictions as possible. All I did was pull a cut T-Shirt tightly around my CAI inlet and hose clamped it.
