do you general maintenance, clean the IACV, throttle body ( all in stickies ). then go from there. starter may be on its last legs

Fuel requirement difference between 96/7 and 98/9?

Hi guys!

So I'm out looking for Accords to replace my 3/4 ton Suburban (12mpg), ran across a 99 Max, and quite simply, fell in love.

Went to http://fueleconomy.gov to check out the mileage, and noticed something rather strange. While the site lists 96s and 97s as needing premium fuel, it has the 98s and 9s using regular.

Aren't all 4th gen engines the same?

Is this an error, or did the minor emission tweaks made during the 4th gen's cylce allow lower octane gas?

Not a deal breaker, but if there is a difference, I'd probably go with the later years.

Thanks,
Chris

They all have the same engine, and require premium for maximum performance, but regular is fine if performance is not an issue for you.

I dont remember the number, but my friend pull codes with his little computer and he said it was the rear o2 sensor. Theres not really any power in 2nd and 3rd gears when I give it gas, sort of laggy.

the rear o2 sensor (as i have been dealing with this problem for the past few weeks) is code P0136.

it will NOT affect performance in any way - it is purely an emissions requesite to measure the efficacy of the catalytic converter.

sluggish response, for most noob vehicles is the KNOCK SENSOR, which is a ghost code- meaning it wont trip the CEL but still will be telling the ECU it is faulty. start there.

Yea, I was told that I needed to replace the knock sensor as well. Any ideas on where to get a cheap quality knock sensor?

the biggest differences were exterior design pieces, such as trunk, tail lights, front and rear bumper covers. The later years have slightly different emissions equipment....but ya, what specifically do you want to know?

So, I'm shopping for a high mileage 4gen, and have noticed a pattern of oil leakage on the top of the passenger side.Seems to be emenating from the cam sensor(????), and either migrating towards the rear, and downward. Is this typical, and if so, how much of a PITA is it to fix? If it is indeed just the sensor, it looks pretty simple. Is there another common leak which pops up frequently on the front/top of these?

99 SE 5 speed: suspension overhaul

Hey folks,

I'm new the forum and just started looking around. I've happily owned my 99 Maxima SE 5-speed manual, loaded with black on black leather for almost two years now. It's got about 260k and it's still going strong. The only things I've done to it since I bought it is a tune-up, brakes, battery, regular synthetic oil changes and a K&N air filter install. It's completely stock

But the suspension is starting to go, it's making the car feel like a Crown Victoria and I'm lookign to overhaul it.

I want to get new springs, shocks, a rear sway bar and a front strut tower brace.

So I’m wondering what advice you have for a newbie like me who likes his maxima, wants it handle much better, but doesn't know much about mods and aftermarket parts?

I looked on the forums and Cattman U.S.A. is selling the following:

Progress springs/KYB Full Suspension Package with KYB AGX adjustable struts, including sway bar for $699.99

Other people also seem to like Tokico Illumina shocks with eibach springs.

I don’t really know anything about suspensions, so I’m wondering what you think? Also, are their places in Toronto that are good to buy these parts…instead of ordering from the U..S.A.?

Thanks for the info in advance.

look up a tire calculator. there is a link in the wheel/tire section.
235/45R17 or 225/45R17 will probably be your best bet. depends on the offset of the wheels too

get in there an make sure nothing else is bent/tweaked.
yea, it is a good deal, but look around for a while a number of people have picked up kits like that, and the quality is poor, and doesn't last long

if it is actually the cam pos sensor, there is just an o-ring to replace and you'll be good to go

So, how common are tranny leaks on these?

Damn near every one I've crawled under, has a little fluid accumulating on the big-*** bolts located between the wishbones on the driver side. They all seemed to shift fine, but fluid leaks scare me.

And how do I tell if it has ABS?

Didn't realize these were optional until I flatspotted a dealer's tires yesterday!

Not so common on AT's, but quite common on MT's.

Have you inspected to see what is wrong? I've nailed a curb and raped my control arm. I then replaced it, went to get it aligned, and found I needed a strut, since the old on was bent. Trial & Error

Depends on the brand. Typically, they will mount to the MAF sensor housing with a bracket / adapter.

Pop the hood, and look at the brake fluid reservoir area. If there is an ABS module (metal box w/ metal lines going everywhere) then you have ABS.

well when shopping parts a lot of the time i see them listed for 95-99 but quite often they're listed for 97-99 instead....ive seen it on suspension, brake, internal engine mods and turbo kits. I know its the same motor, so Im a little confused why they wouldnt include 95-96 models in their part spec

I did the same thing and ended up replacing the right lower control arm, and the tie rod, as well as getting a new strut, and a new wheel...so just check the damage...if your wheel is almost touching the back of the wheel well your looking at a control arm at the least

that people who are selling these parts know they're talking about.

Do you have links, etc to these places that are calling out different P/N's for internal engine parts & turbos, etc?

Do the short rams generally just come with that, with everything you will need?

If anyone has gotten a short ram from somewhere for their 96, could you please link me?

Or anyone, please link me to some good ones...Thanks

Well, then, there's your answer. eBay = not the place you want to be building a quality turbo kit or internal engine parts, unless there is proven documentation (a la VQ35 cams)
