Well you should hear a click when the AC clutch engages, and there may be some noise, but it shouldn't be loud or obtrusive. If it is a high pitched whining it may be a problem with your alternator bearings.

If you blip the throttle, do you hear a squeal? If so, it could the AC belt could be slipping.

i check my belts i don't think thats the problem... i'm also getting this what i think is unsual sound coming from the right side of my engine bay... its either air being sucked in or out... i might be from the intake... i don't ever recall hearing this sound before my problem w/ the ac whining at the beginning

air sound at startup

I have the same sound at startup. It sounds like air being released. It goes away once you start moving. any ideas?

Though it might not be the cause of the hum, belt squeal might mean that the belts are worn and/or the tension/deflection needs to be adjusted. You may also want to check for contamination on the belt from fluids leaking into that area, which would also cause the belt to slip.

whine

It is perhaps good to know that I am not the only one with this whining noise too.
I noticed mine last winter, whenever the belts would get wet (even now after a night when there is a lot of precipitation), when I start the car the next morning, there is a loud whine. It goes away after a few minutes when the moisture has been dried.

I was wondering--is this a "bearing/tension" issue or is this just simply a wet belt issue--which is not much for concern. How many miles do you guys have on your car? mine has about 34K as of last week.
