Starting Probles... CEL Codes keep coming back... Running out of ideas...

Please take a second to read all this before you reply… Thanks in advance…

I have a 99SE 5 Speed and have been having problems lately... It has gone into the shop, I have waited for backordered parts, I have paid labor, now my mechanic is stumped...

To start from the beginning a couple of weeks or so ago I had a check engine light come on, So I went to AutoZone to have them run the codes, and they found "Oxygen Sensor" & "Knock Sensor" Codes... I set up an appointment with my mechanic to have them fixed and brakes and oil change... (A Week Later) A day before I got my car to the mechanic it started having trouble starting (would crank strong, but not catch for 10-30 seconds sometimes more...) I took it in the next day, and when they checked the codes they found a "Crank Sensor" & "one of the two codes mentioned above" & and the clutch switch started acting up (When clutch was in car would crank once and die the only way to start was with car in neutral and clutch not depressed, which is normal for my car)... The mechanic replaced some belt, did brakes and oil change, and ordered the crank sensor... The crank sensor was back ordered for a few days, Tested the O2 Sensor and it is operating fine, tested Injector Pulse within range... I took the car back in to him, and he replaced the sensor... Nothing changed, the car still has the starting problem, the clutch switch is still working funny, and when we cleared the codes the CEL came on right away... I checked all applicable fuses, all fine there…

Also I got in an accident a year ago, and banged up the front driver side corner really good (busted axel and some body damage... I am curious if this is maybe the cause, or contributor to the problem...

And I don’t have an aftermarket alarm or starter…

This is my last resort before I let the dealership rape me.. (which I can't afford)
If you need a crankshaft position sensor make an offer, I got a brand new one I cant return.... Cost me close to $175

Saturday I checked the codes, and got
0407 - Crankshaft Position Sensor (Reference)
0901 - Front Right Htd O2 Sensor Heater
0304 - Knock Sensor

I cleaned my IAC Valve (Very Dirty)
Cleaned my Throttle Body (Very Dirty)
Replaced my Fuel Filter
Replaced my PCV Valve
Ran some Injector Cleaner In when I got gas Friday

I reset the codes and went for a drive app. 8 Miles...
BTW it started a little easier like 5-7 turnovers now, but not easy yet...
NO codes came back...
Parked for 20 mins went out and turned it on & CEL came on...
Only got 1 code:
0505 - No Failure Recorded/Detected

What does this mean?

OK to recap what the car is doing now…
It cranks for an around 30 seconds before it starts, with the car in neutral and clutch not depressed...

It wont start when the clutch is in (turns over once and dies)

It has A CEL of (0505 - No Failure Recorded/Detected)
(Last checked codes Sat, will check tonight again and post)

Any Ideas?

I am running out of ideas, and don’t want to drop my baby off at the dealer with no plan…

Tonight when I get home…
- I plan to check ground wires…
- I want to look for shorts, but need a little direction on how to do that first…
- I also plan to do my plugs…
- I will once again check/clear the codes…

My next step is to test/replace the starter motor, but it cranks strong, so I have been holding off on that for now…

Once I fix the starting problem I plan to replace the knock sensor…

Thanks for all your help…
David

Sounds like a crank ref problem. You sure they replaced the correct sensor? This is the one near the belts on the oil pan. Take it out and clean it, put it back in. Check the 2 grounds on the intake manifold, remove the bolts and sand and reinstall. Report back

ITS FIXED!!!

Thanks for all the help everyone that helped...

I replaced the plugs, and checked the groung... not fixed
I looked to see if they replaced the correct sensor, and it was new, however there was a cut in the wire going to the sensor... I fixed the cut and the problem...

I am only left with one problem.. The clutch switch
* I can start the car fine with no clutch in neutral...
* I cant start the car with the clutch depressed...

As a temp fix I disconected the switch, so I can start anyway I want now, but I would like to fix that problem too...

I am downloading pics from my camera now, and will post a pic of the gash tomorow morning along with the dirty and clean IACV....

THANKS ALOT
DVAID...

I'll look tonight... never thought of that...

I kind of like being able to start without the clutch depressed...
if it does not cause any damage to other parts...

I will be able to add remote start if I want without the extra crap for stick cars now too...
