Engine Noise

... Here's the clip on Putfile.

I'm guessing timing chain problem ... Should I get a kit and change the whole system or should I just get a tensioner and a guide ... No clue.

And how much would it cost for each option?

Please help ... Btw, sometime I see a surge of little white smoke from that area ... What's the problem ... ? I'm planning on taking it to a shop, which is about 20 miles away, should I drive there or have it towed? ... Scared to death.

Thanks for any help or suggestion.

Doesn't' sound good/right. I've replaced the tensioner/sprockets and chain. And it DID NOT sound like that. How does the oil look? I would open it up and see is the problem. My guess is that the tensioner is in heaven.

I checked oil, it looks OK. But I still changed it anyway. The video is after the oil change ... Still scared to death. I just got the kit ... It's on its way. Problem is ... should I still drive it to the shop, or just have it towed ...

Btw ... Is this what I should get? ... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nissa...spagenameZWD1V

why would you be scared?? if its not makin any major noises in idle or going down the road then why are you replacing the chain??? white smoke is antifreeze btw, check your radiator fluid and make sure your up to level in overflow tank too. then make sure your fluid aint shot, every 30,000 for a complete flush, not just the rad itself. if you have any rust in rad then you might be in trouble. one thing at a time and don't beat on her. have the dealer take a look first and then go to a different shop thats qualified and do whats needed, good luck>>>>

That noise remains there on idle and also in gear ... That's why I'm guessing timing chain. I'll check my anti-freeze and rad today ... Hope there won't be any problem there ...

Thanks max ride.

Have you determined the sound is originating inside the engine? Remove your serpentine belt and start the car and see if the noise is still there. It could be bad bearings in a pulley/equipment off the serpentine belt. Have you tried listening with a s***hoscope to each piece of equipment off the serpentine belt?

Sounds like a bearing in belt tensioner or A/C pulley. Does the noise change much when the A/C is on? If you do not have a s***hoscope you can use a long screwdriver with a hard plastic handle. Put the screwdriver where you want to listen and put the handle to your ear. YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL DOING THIS SINCE YOU ARE AROUND MOVING PARTS THAT CAN GRAB YOU OR THE SCREWDRIVER AND DO SERIOUS DAMAGE. YOU MUST USE COMMON SENCE.

Uhm, I determined that the noise come from the engine, not the belt or its tensioner or AC pulley...

Strange enough, during cool whether (at night), the noise kinda went away ... Any reasoning behind this?

my 95 maxima is making the same sound coming from the cover over the timing chain. I used a s***hoscope to try to pinpoint where the sound was coming from and it was coming from the timing chain cover. Probably just going to go ahead and replace timing chain, water pump, and everything else that goes along with it.

If you are going to go to that extent, you might as well just get another engine. Time for the 3.5 swap?

sounds like mine. A/C bearing noise. I think Sky Jumper was first to have and diagnosed this problem. He also has a video on here with identical sound as yours. http://forums.maxima.org/showpost.ph...4&postcount=50

Doesn't sound like any A/C problem i've ever heard. Sounds like you either have a broken tensioner or one of your chain guides broke off. Either way, i'd spend the extra couple of bucks and have it towed, better safe than sorry, if your chain ends up coming off, you could incure some pretty serious problems.

Uhm, my AC clutch is shot about 7 months ago. When it is not engaged, it sounds like Sky Jumper's. But when it's engaged, it's fine.

The additional noise just happened very recently. I still think it's either a tensioner or something relate to the timing chain. I just got the kit from ebay. I'll try to replace it and see how it goes.

Oh, btw, my AC electrical board is melted .... Hahah, time for a new compressor .... and dryer .... and timing chain kit .... I'm dead broke T_T

If it is your timing chain you shouldn't be driving your car. Remove the belts and see if you have any noise. I believe you we find your engine is quiet with the belt removed, money saved for you A/C so you can stay cool this summer.

idk about that. I'm not really going for perfomance with the maxima. (thats what the '72 datsun 240z is for lol). All i would have to pay for is parts at shop cost, so it won't be too bad. I'll check the A/C bearing thing that zeeman mentioned and see if thats it before I buy all those parts tho.

My dad said that he already checked all of the pulleys and everything, the noise was still there, so I'm going to go ahead and change the timing chain and everything.

Ok, updates on the original problem ....

All of the noise come from the AC compressor ... Once I removed my serpentine belt ... the engine runs as quiet as a rabbit ... You can't hear a darn thing ... Now, I'm just gonna have to figure out how to get rid of my ... Timing Chain Kit without having to pay restocking fee ... Soob soob ...

So I bypassed the AC compressor. All runs smooth for now. I'm waiting on the AC compressor to get here along with the drier. I'm taking them to a shop to have them replaced, evacuated and recharged ... Shop quoted 480 for AC services and replacement ... Sounds about right?

Sounds like stealership pricing to me. Shop around a little, or find a mechanic to do it for cash.

Yeap. A/C service should only run around $100 max. Labor fro Putting in new compressor shouldn't be more than $150.00.... Easy.... Easy thing to do. Didn't take me more than two hours to put a new one in for my buddy.

(took it to a shop, had them take out the freon with the service machine, brought it back and replaced it, took it back for them to recharge it. Total cost: $150 including new compressor.)

Uhm ... is there a write up to replace the AC compressor and drier? I'd probably just have the shop remove the freon and flush. Then I'll replace the stuff and have them recharge the system ... ^^
