MAF-Does car run if it breaks ?

If I break the MAF, does the car still run or am I stranded ? Sure it will throw a code at me.. but will I be calling the wife to come rescue me (never a good thing) ?

I removed the 4 screws in the side of it to "remove " the sensor...tugged on it a bit.. and out came the connector with 3 unsoldered leads that I presume I broke the connections to inside.. I did not look inside much to see how I might repair it.. put it back in place.. put the screws back in.. and so far, idling in the driveway, no check engine light.

Does that mean they are making contact right now inside ? Does it need to be driven to prove its failing ? Anyone ever look inside these things to see if there is room to solder it back together ? Figure I might have to add some wire to each contact so I can solder it while I can see it.. and then tuck it into place... Getting a new one is not a good option.. I see some for sale here.. just worried about getting a 10 year old part.. could be doing it again soon.

first off... didn't you already make a post about this?
second... if you broke the MAF it would run, but really crappy (like not reving above 2000 rpm or something like that)
third... (again) if you in fact did break the solder ... just resolder it and it will be fine

The car will run but it wont rev past 2000, or 2500. Ive moved my car around before without a maf.

It'll run but you'll hit fuel cut at 2400rpm and it won't run particularly well. I've started mine up without a MAF (straight TB) but haven't actually put it in gear.

Mine also just barely idled on it's own with a dead MAF (while it was connected, disconnected it idled more or less ok).

You (The-3rd_man) are correct.. i had started a post on the a/c condensor that has sprung a leak and then found my check engine light on.. and was thinking no one would look at that post if I didn't make one specifically on the MAF itself..which is my bigger problem now.

I am having trouble getting it out of the downstream side of it..where it appears in a rubber surrounding gasket.. I am thinking I might rip that rubber if I keep tugging..Is that an easy , cheap part to find if I should do so ? I can't really see what damage I have done to the MAF itself until I get it out of there.

I hope I can solder it easily and button it back up ...

Does the car use the MAF signal while its still cold? My '95 starts to act crazy and stall out after it warms up- and it wont rev very high while trying to accelerate. The car will often refuse to crank back up at all while hot.

Did it have any codes? Mine spat out these:

11 03 / Improper Shifting to First Gear (A/T)
01 02 / Mass Air Flow Sensor
03 04 / Knock Sensor

And it wont rev past 2.5-3k range or shift out half the time.. I also noticed if I bang the MAF, the rpms will change- suggesting bad connections.

which i think are misfire, knock sensor, and maf sensor.
so what do you think

Bad MAF could probably cause all those codes. Don't worry about the KS until you address the other two.

I've driven 30+ miles home with my MAF unplugged. Keep it @ about 60MPH and you'll be fine.

Seems logical doesn't it? Replace the KS and be done w/it.
