If the tranny is slipping, youll see the RPMs rise and the car will not accelerate. Almost feels like its come out of gear.

A good way to test this is to go find a very steep uphill incline, stop at the bottom and put the car in 2nd gear and stomp the throttle. This will give the engine a huge load and if the tranny's gonna slip it'll do it then. If it starts revving and pulls like 5spd with the clutch being let out extremely slowly then it's slipping.

i rebuilt my tranny abotu 15k ago. cost me 1100 at a reputable shop with 1 year warranty. kinda alot i think, but i trust this shop. i had a small rear main seal leak about 5k after install. they switch it no questions asked. no other problems yet and it seems smoother than when i bought the car.

if you buy one off the market, your pretty much jsut buying a used rebuilt tranny anyway. a new one will cost ridiculously too much.

My Tranny is just starting to slip @ 94K.. We must have weak autos in our cars, my old 92 Protege just started to slip at 130k on the original fluid. Oh well I'm dumping the car with in the month of June, so one problem the next owner car deal with. I have already thrown thousands in repairs to this car and with gas the way it is as soon as I felt the tranny slip I knew it was time for the max to go.

As for your question I would just have yours rebuilt, or take your chances with a salvage yard auto.

its dumb to get a new one. rebuilts are usually right about 1 grand give or take a few bills. its usually cheapest to get a used tranny from a junkyard in good condition and swap it out. however, this is totally a risk !

What really causes the tranny to slip? is it a poor clutch (even autos) or bad/worn teeth?

Mine is on its way out im sure and would really like to do it myself. I dont mind big projects like that.

Is it too much to do by yourself?

OK, if you want it rebuilt...please PM KRRZ350. He just currently rebuilt a 5 spd for another org member. He is very reasonable and will not rip you off at all. He is probably a good 2 hours from Hartford, but I would definitely recommend him.

You need special tools. The friction clutches being worn is what causes a tranny to slip. The pressure from the planetary wears these surfaces on the friction plates and the friction clutches slip on the plates.

KRRZ350 is your man for the job. Have the tranny shipped right to him and have him rebuild and go spend a day having him put it in. I am sure he would be interested.
