Again we're talking to the crank which isnt real accurate but:
190hp stock
20hp ecu
20hp ypipe
20hp cai/sp2
15hp mevi
________________
265hp total
no arguement that the max comes stock with 190. ts ecu gives about 20hp. everyone knows the big bang for buck mod is the ypipe for 20hp. pr cai claims 5-8hp while the sp2 is good for 15hp, cuz the max loves to breath; so I combine them for 20hp. mevi is about 15hp from 5k up. 265/crank
if we use your calculation of 15% for 5mt, then you've got 225hp to the wheels. i dont know what the car puts to the wheels right now.. but ill find out shortly after i throw the mevi in.
to answer the question whether or not I beat z's and g35's.. no. but they dont crush me. i can hang for the first 3 gears, them pulling ahead by just a couple car lengths. and hell thats not bad, ill take it for a 4 door sedan, n/a. I dont know what the difference in weight is, but Im sure the max is heavier. plus i've got a system, electronics, 18s. im good with it.
..just wait till I force induction!

best was when my buddy took his 98 max to a chevy factory (he has some high position at) and got them to dyno it with their "special" ways of adding HP to their cars and they said it was about 237 . lol

I bought my SE 5-speed new in 1995 for my wife. It has never given us any serious trouble and it has 230,000 miles on it today. My daughter drove it to high school for three years but she couldn't wait to get rid of it (I guess because she grew up in it...she drives a 2003 2.5L auto-tragic altima now...he he). Now, I finally get to drive the Max !!! I can't wait to drive it in the morning to work, to lunch and back home at quit’n time. I've spent about $2,500 on it in the past 6 months and it is running great. When I get home, my 2 year old boy looks at me and says, "work on the max?" He help me get the transmission back in (sort of) and helped us wax it Saturday. The Bose sound is great and the air conditioner is colder than my Z-71 truck and my E-430. I've still got cosmetic issues to fix (fender, hood, sunroof) and I really want heated seats (the E-430 spoiled me). I'm planning on putting another 100,000 miles on my Maxima. I'm shifting_happy these days plus I have maxima.org !!!

Like I said before, you'd be fortunate to even see 200 WHP which would be 235CHP. With that said though, you'll be significantly faster than stock. But with that MEVI you really should consider extending your redline (the TS ECU can't do this).

My crunchy 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th gears drive me INSANE, my clutch makes a noise when I push it to the floor when above 5.5K RPMS, the engine is getting sluggish because it needs a little bit of maintanence, no heated seats, BOSE speakers are lacking, interior is getting a little old with rattles, and clutch job costed me 1K including parts (don't ask ... got shafted by mechanic).
With all that said, I cannot bring myself to get rid of the car. I just keep thinking to myself, if I can waste the engine (got 160K) then I can get a 3.5 swap. Of course the VQ NEVER freakin dies. Then I think to myself, if I get a 3.5 on my transmission that is in horrible shape then I am bound to blow it out and then ... oh no ... a better geared 6SPD tranny will have to take the place. Crap ... if I am using the 6spd tranny and 3.5 engine, then I might as well do a full 3.5+ECU swap because I like cutting wires over removing timing equipment . You get the point.
All the negatives are actually positives in disguise

NISMO is right though. Each of those mods alone, if performed on a stock Maxima, should return those gains or close to them. Together, their advantages/gains start to overlap and the numbers start to decrease with each mod.
EX: Y-pipe -> better exhaust flow ... SP2 -> better exhaust flow. You get the point, you are only going to get so much exhaust flow gains with exhaust mods.
HOWEVER, I do believe your mods should have you barely over 200WHP for sure.

Who's to say that wasn't a cheap, aftermarket replacement bumper that we all know paint has a hard time sticking to, primered or not? The 4th gen paint jobs that I've seen go really bad are due to abuse. If you want to, you can make it last. Sure it's a little thin, but I've seen alot worse from other manufacturers of that same era.

fwd trannies, 2.5lt motors and paint/fit finish arent one

ive always loved the maxima line, even though my ideal ride would be the 03' maxima se, my '97 will do. the vq30 isnt anything to complain about
..intending on going to vq35 soon.. =)
its also my first car so ive come to enjoy the feel of ride. dont know what i'd do with the maxima.

for me, my 2nd A32, now with the SE-L. I wrecked my GXE, and bought the SE-L for the same price, less miles, and had the added fun of re-modding. Redid all I modded on my first one, then took it to the next level with the ypipe, ES motor mounts and bushings, and progress coilovers. I believe, and my friends agree, that I have one of the more personalized and better performing rides out there. It's a max, but it's MY max, and these cars allow us to make them our original creations. Oh yeah, and no car payment.

i once read that you can have two of the following in a car..
-fast
-cheap
-reliable
the max is the closest thing to filling all three. plus i wont be able to afford collision on a car anytime soon (was thinking about buying a vr4 last year but realized collision would be 500/month). and my max hasnt given me any trouble since i have had it.

Confidently knowing in 2 years when my son reaches permit age he will have his first slighlty modded max. The car is very reliable, kinda like these old Ford and Chevy owners who remember back when the big 3 made cars right, but still buy the crap based on nostalgia.
Maxima is one of the best, ever IMO.
