Car crash, seek advice

Hey guys,

I was involved in an accident yesterday on I-95. I was on the left passing lane when the sliver Pontiac in front of me took an emergency stop. Due to slippery condition of the road caused by the rain and lack of evading room produced by heavy traffic, I crashed into in the Pontiac. Here are some pictures.

http://picasaweb.google.com/Keluoy/99MaximaCrash

So my front suffered a lot of damage. The air bags didn't come out luckily. The Pontiac's rear bumper is broken in the lower half and the exhaust pipe is totally bent.

The cop gave an infraction for failure to maintain a safe distance. But he also said I wont get any points increase on my license if I pay the fine of $103. The Indian guy driving the Pontiac said he didn't carry his insurance with him because the car was a rental. I later called him after the accident and he refused to give me his insurance information. I think something sketchy is going on. Could he have no insurance? Luckily I have collision and that should cover it in the worst-case scenario.

What do you guys think? Is the car likely repairable? How much do you think the damage will be?

That looks a lot like the damage my car had this winter when i hit a corolla after sliding into a ditch in the snow. Same thing happened, their car was fine, my front end got crushed. I got it repaired for about half of what the insurance company gave me when they totaled it. I think insurance gave me 5700 and i had it repaired for less then 3000.

EDIT> Here are some pictures..

ell if it was a rental, it wouldnt be hard for him to show insurance....didnt the cop ask him for that or something?Sounds kinda funny.

That looks like my accident:

I ended up spending like $1100 and doing all the work myself. I estimate the cost because I had a parts car with all the parts sitting in my driveway. Go to a junkyard...I'm sure you can find everything you need. Your frame looks fine so you'll probably need the same stuff I did. Headlights, hood, bumper (maybe), grill, ac condensor, radiator, etc.

If your ins company says theyre totaling the car out, b sure and tell them you still want the car for sentimental values, they will deduct like 10% and salvage the title, but at least youll have the money to buy another and sell it for parts or fix yours and have money left over. I would upgrade personally If it were me.

Sorry to hear the news about ur max, as far as repairing it, you can do it it just depends on what your insurance says and what you want to do after that.

i dunno how it is in NY... in NJ even if they cut u off and u rear end them ur at fault, unless the guy u hit has no insurance than he is at fault.

collision insurance is what fixes YOUR car. not the car you hit. LIABILITY insurance is what will fix the persons car that you hit. Good luck with your repairs! :-) Im calling about 3k in damage.

Hey guys,

My insurance just got back to me. So the car was totaled and they are probably going to issue me a check for $8700. It was quoted $6000 for repairing everything. I was determined to be at fault, but since I won’t have any points increase on my license, I have not idea how much the premium hike is going to be. I think I'm going to let the insurance company take the car and I'll move on to a 2008 scion tc. It will take too much work for me to buy it back and sell it for parts or repairing it (I don’t yet know much the buy back price yet). Any suggestions for what I'm trying to do?

I wouldn't move to a new car with $8700 because of the inevitable insurance hike, unless you've got a new car fund going already.

i find it kinda hard to believe that the insurance company's gonna give you 8,700 for your max. even a 99 with low miles is booking at around 6,500, so how are they coming up with that figure??? unless you put a new engine in or it was amazingly clean. and i'm guessing you had collision on it to be getting anything because otherwise that would be a total loss.

I did spend $1200 last month replaced many aging parts. There was new rotors, mass air sensors, etc. It was really a nice car with full clean leather interior that can be mistaken for a new car.
