different intake filter types/shapes?

hey, right now i have a generic cone filter hooked up to my car right now and i love it. i was at my cousins apts. one day and he popped the hood to his M3 and his air filter was shaped like a cylinder. does the cylinder shaped intake perform better than cones? thanks
