Thanks for the info on the AC. But now another problem has cropped up and any thoughts on it would be appreciated before I take it to the mechanic. I have a ticking noise that appears to be connected to the clutch. The ticking noise is present when the engine is idling and when I am driving in first and second gear up to about 3k rpm. I did observe that the ticking noise appears to stop when I push the clutch all the way in, but will return when I release the clutch. The ticking does seem to speed up as the engine winds up. However, I can't seem to hear the ticking going into third gear or higher. If you have any ideas as to what it might be and possible solutions I would appreciate it.

interesting
I have the exact same problem as you do! I have a 3rd gen 1994 Maxima SE.
It was suggested to be the throw out bearing by JeffSE.
If you get any other suggestions, please let me know too.
