The earliest car engines had low compression ratios because the fuels then available had low AKI. For example, the Ford Model T had a compression ratio of only 3 to 1. Of course, the people who used a hand crank to start those engines were glad the CR wasn't any higher.
Using gas with octane ratings higher than what the maker's recommendation is, will yield NOTHING in the way of performance.
Racing fuel also has the potential to clog your cat and coat your 02 sensor.
Do what you will, you have been warned

Well we do have Hi-Compression engines, hence the fact we are recommended to use premium gas. My sis has used the crappy regular for about 4 years on her max, and everything is fine.
IMO, using a less-than-premium grade of gas only effects performance, b/c her car has been fine ever since she first used the crappy 86 octane.
But, yea, anything above 93octane is a waste. You can't "gain" performance with premium, but you "lose" it when you put lower octanes in.
Either way your maxima should be a-ok.
