Hey Charles welcome to the org. Medicsonic has you well on your way. I'll just say I have a 95 $E with 118,000 miles on it and it is still going strong. I would reccommend that year, but I understand it is now 7 years old. You are making a wise decision considering the 4th generation. (in my biased opinion they are the best.) Also, if you are more performance oriented you may want to find a 5 speed. Some people swap 5 speeds for autos, and others do a 'mod' to their autos to get them to shift a little snappier.
BTW - there are some people that feel Nissan started to cut a few corners on the Maxs after the 95s. For instance the 95 has cornering lights while models after that year don't, but thru this forum you can find a way to rewire the 96's and up. Just read thru all these threads and do searchs. Good luck. You'll love getting a MAX!!!

I've heard that the 97 year is the best. It incorporates a new look (new maxima letters on the rear), new front end, new headlights, grill, fog lights, interior center console, just to name a few features that the 95-96 don't have
BTW, I have a 96, it's really great. I personally like the 96 front end better than the redesigned version for 97 and up. Anyway, have fun choosing a car! Surely get a 5-speed! (Which I don't have though )
Welcome to maxima.org. Don't mind some of the weirdos here lol, and try your best to use the search function. There have been some mighty mean flames against newbies who ask what seems like "basic" questions to the elders, heh heh.

Welcome
Hi Charles, 97 - 99 is the years you should look for. I think thats the best body all around. Lights and all.
And theres nothing wrong with automatic max's, there just smoother to drive...
Enjoy the ride!
