Poorman¡¯s cheapa$$ cosmetic makeover Part-2 ¡°almost true HID¡±
Welcome to poorman's cheapa$$ project!
OK.. poorman got no money but he always loves to modify his Max.
This time, complete HID for under $30 and that's price for a pair!
Dang~ how is it possible? Did he borrow some HID from his friendly local dealer at night?
Poorman is a Goodman and he only works for honest money.
Anyways, please look at the pictures and judge for yourself.
Poorman only did one side first so everyone on the board could compare side by side before he finishes them all.
How about plain daylight view?

See the difference at night?

Side with blue coating
Notice. My PIAA extreme white side marker light looks even more yellowish?

Now, both of headlights have generic Hyperwhite 80W Xeon bulbs already installed.
Also the corner lights have PIAA extreme white bulbs, too.
Can you see the difference? Not only it looks great at daylight, but also at night it glows HID look alike blue beam instead of white beam and looks really good!
I¡¯m going to tint the side mirrors, too.
This film has special coating and does not produce any prism effect or glare.
Fully metalized & scratch-risistance film means this blue tint will not fade-away easily.
Unfortunately, I brought all his blue (only a few feet) film from a guy at E-bay and he does not have it anymore..sorry guys.
But if you can find this type of film it will look really good on your Max!
My advice is look at E-bay or search the internet!
Try contact film sellers and ask about this type of film.
Someone out there probably know the source of this film.
If you did find the source then please post the contact info for everyone who's interested in this board!
I personally do not like real HID on 4 th gen max because the housing is not designed for HID.
Second, you¡¯ll loose high-beam feature.
I think this is an important feature for emergency situation and if someone hand me $500 then I rather spend this money on Y-pipe, pulleys and the leftover change for this project.
I spent $15 on a set of Xeon(blubs) + $15 for Blue film.
And yeah! if you don't like my projest you can always throw me a flame!
All comments are welcome!

hahaha.. those lights are 80/100W and I really couldn't tell the major difference at night driving except my lights are more bluish.
Yeah! I also have 100W foglights!
And yeah! I upgraded harnesses, too.

Well, if you like it and you are glad of it, then stick with it. What you do is what you choose, and you own the car. So do what you want with it. Those other people didn't pay 20k+ for it, you did. But to let you know, if the headlight itself wasn't so BLUE, then that would be a GREAT mod.

heh,
I think those look pretty nice .. as far as "looks" go..
They're ricey in the fact it undermines performance for the sake of looks. As for your mod, wether it qualifies as ricey or not depends on what you do with the $500 you save.
I'd take HID look + Y-pipe over true HID anyday. (course I already have a Y-pipe so bla)..

Poorman idea is a good idea..........
That is a really great idea. I am not going to lie if it looks good then keep it. Forget what anyone has to say about your idea it is only an opinion and at the same time it makes you unique. Now one thing I have to say is that those corners are pretty yellow. Go to the store and buy you some 27/12 blue light bulbs. Shave down the little nipple the top one and insert them backwards and there your car should be blue all around. That guy Nismo posted that and I did it and it worked. I ll try this if I can find the blue film your talking about. I have PIAA's they are pretty bright light bulbs and expensive but dont give you that bluish tint we are in search of but the high beams do give you that blue tint but it wouldnt be polite to drive with those bad boys like that you'd blind people.

Jung, try 2 pieces instead of one piece.
On sharp curves your choice will be limited to 2 or more pieces.
Make sure you cut it precisely so it won¡¯t look like an armature¡¯s work.
First, let it dry just a little bit then work your way out.
Warp towel over your squeeze to absorb and prevent the water going back into the film.. it also helps prevent scratches.
You may use hairdryer not heat gun! This will speed up your drying time.
Just some tips from local tintshop.
I¡¯ve also tried on dorm light, door lights and side mirrors and they all look fantastic and you can¡¯t really *****ing about this project after spending $15 for all this! Try it man... it will look good!

Now, I¡¯ve searched the forum about brighten up the corners but it wasn¡¯t clear to me somehow¡¦
I shaved down the little nipple... the top one and insert them backwards and yes it was damn bright but it was too loose.
Does anyone know how to secure this modified bulbs?
I shaved center nipple on the side of the bulb but again too loose.
