I love my 96 and have 80,000 miles on it. I've always noticed a mild thud going from 1st to 2nd (automatic Trans). With letting off the throttle at the right time it disappears and pushing it will accent it, sometimes loud. There's no loss in power or slippage. Fluid is reported as clean. Is this a known phenomenon, is it a sign of trouble or not?

That's not a problem...it's a "feature."

Unfortunately, that's fairly normal. I've noticed it seems worse when the car and trans are cold.

 

He is right. All maxima's (auto) do it.

I personally like it. It makes the car feel more sporty. I don't want that weak-*** soft shift that old women like. Although when the engine warms up it get's better.

Your maxima is fine. And sporty.

 

wouldnt a VB mod take care of the thud? I notice the same thing in my 97 and i want it to be a smoooooth shift. So will the VB mod do the job?

 

The VB will make your shifting rougher. I reduces the slippage between gears which is what gives that nice smooth shift. So there will be more thudding, better performance though.

 

thud = good

 

A thud isn't necessarily good though, that could be a sign of 'flaring', the beginnings of a transmission failure. Get your transmission line pressure checked.

 

true that... my tranny looks like its gonna blow soon, so i am in the look out for a new lsd 5 spd canadian tranny

 

There's only one source for a new one, and that's a dealer.

 

Just out of curiousity any idea what the price would be on somethign like that? What are the advantages as well?
