does anyone know if the 2002 engine can fit in the 4 generation maxima

Don't rely on appearance. Get out your steel tape and measure the '02 engine. Then you will know.

The engine cover is a cosmetic item. If that cover is the only obstacle to an engine swap you could discard it.
