help! grinding noise right front axle

hey guys, i was wondering if anyone could help me.. Every time I turn the steering wheel in either direction, i hear this moaning grinding noise from the right front axle of max.. this axle has been problematic for me ever since 40,000 miles. The noise wasn't very loud before, but now its getting a lot louder and more distinct. Any ideas on what this might be? the boot? steering? the actual axle? ah.. any help would be great

It could probably be brake dust. It happened to me a while back and it was annoying as hell! Try spraying some brake cleaner on it, that worked for me.

The noise happens when i'm standing still and when i'm moving. It makes a groaning clicking noise about every 5 degrees that the wheel is turned in either direction. I was hoping that it could be an untightened strut, but it seems to be far worse than that.

This could be a bad strut bearing. For more information ...
Go to http://www.motorvate.ca/
In the left window click on Suspension
In the left window click on Strut Bearing Fix

This is an excellent site for the Maxima home mechanic.
You may like to browse all of it.

Motorvate suggests repacking the strut bearings. I'd prefer to replace them.

I agree with DMB replace them. 40 bucks for the set at your local Nissan dealer. I'd also like to point out you have H&Rs, and a lot of people here a very similar noise as you are describing after the H&R install. I have my own theories on where the noise is coming from. One being it's actually the spring moving or twisting slightly in it's seats. Keep in mind the H&R sping is shorter, less windings, and tighter. So the being the spring is more taunt, it gives less then the stock setup. Move chance for a slight movement or twist of the spring on it's seats then the stock which can absorb more movement and perhaps twist slightly without upsetting it's seating position.
