TINT laws in New Jersey

is it or is it not legal to have the front two windows tinted upto 35%?? The inspection place just took the tint off my front windows! Unfortunately i am not home to argue so i have to wait till saturday but its to late cause they already took it off, where can i go online to get official state law on it.

35's aren't too dark anyway... I made the mistake of getting those done all around now I wish i had gotten darker tints on the rear windows...
Anybody know of a way to make it darker without peeling them off and getting them done over? don't some detail centers use some sort of chemical to restore color to a tint, I new a kid who had his car detailed and I couldn't see the scrathes in this tint after that.

You are not "legally" allowed to tint ANY window in NJ. If you read the laws correctly, anything aftermarket, tint, sidemarkers, neon, spoiler, is not legal. If the car comes with it, its ok, otherwise a cop can give you a 3:15, unauthorized equipment. They don't enforce them, but its the law.

And to whoever said they got 50% tints....there's no such thing..lol.

they go from darkest to lightest:
5%(limo), 20%, 30%, 35%, 70%, 100%

There are even more weird percentages, it's just that most shops don't carry them. Some people here on the org have % like 32, 30, 15, and more. This includes 50%.

As for the cops, I don't know about Jersey, but I had 20% on my 3rd gen all around in NYC and no problems with cops, occasional looks etc but no problems. At checkpoints I rolled my windows down Cops usually mess with you for tints here if they pull you over for another more serious violation. They are too lazy to get out the car for just tint The fine gets quite expensive though, my friend was pulled over for speeding and was warned that he could be fined 70$ per tinted window, including 2 small windows in the back. That's over 400$ in fines.
