my max vrs celica GTS

well i hate to say i lost.. me and my friend luke raced down the streets and at the 1/4 mile track and he beet me at both spots. he does have intake and i am a totaly stock 97 5spd, but he still got me. id take him into second everytime untill his little now 188hp (at flywheel) little i-4 vvtl-i toyota engine hit 6500 rpm and started to pull on me. but when i get a cai ill woop him back (by the measily 1 car to half car legth he took me by (once i got him but another time he got 2 cars on me) lol so i wouldnt under-estimate the celica. (GTS ONLY!!!!!) oh and for the record the v-6 in the camary is pittiful!

On the streets what kinda distance did it take for him to start pulling on you? Get the CAI andthen show him whats up.

I don't think the CAI alone will make that great of a difference

I first thought it's because I'm auto, he's 6spd. Now, I don't feel so bad knowing that I'm not alone on this one, 5spd or auto.

BTW- My encounter was on a highway. Ripped him thru traffic (where skills r required). He then caught up and proceeded to walk me on a straight away from 75mph onward. 1st and only defeat til this day.

Intake, Cattman Y-pipe, RT Cat, b-pipe all were irrelevant unless you have boost- b/c that's what I had.

I wouldn't doubt that.

If I read another thread about Max (N/A) killin a GTS, it's either the Max is BS'ing or the driver behind the GTS can't drive a stick for his/her life.

damn this Celica GT-S thing is coming back to kick me in the a$$ every 5 minutes here... i raced a 6-speed GT-S from 60-100ish and he walked.. i was ****ED.. i think all he had was intake and exhaust, but i thought my intake/ypipe/exhaust would have help up.. my 4 gear against his 6.. he walked after 85.. i had a full car on him from 60-85.. i was happy there, until he passed and i saw flashing hazards.. GRRRRR

Hey Brian, i'd like to hear how your car would stand up against a GT-S.. how bad you'd spank him.. go drive around looking for them..!!

I don't know why you guys think GT-S's are so fast. Their torque curve is absolutely horrible and stock with a good driver they are lucky to run low 15s. Granted that will beat a stock auto max, but a 5-speed should have no problem with the GT-S especially up top. I ran a modded on on the highway a few months ago (before my NOS, so don't even factor that in)and I pulled hard on him. I actually think a GS-R would put up a better fight up top.

Wicked....are you sure your buddy only has intake and exhaust????
I was almost dead even with a 6-speed GT-S in my brother's POS Grand Prix GT that runs 16s.

Either the GT-S is not fast or I haven't met a fast one

The two GT-S Celicas that hit 14.3-14.4s were done in the dead of winter (30 degrees) under incredible conditions (32 baro-pressure). That kind of atomospheric pressure is very uncommon and is the equal to running a 2psi blower (no joke). That particular night they ran, there were Civic Si's runnin 14.9s with just an intake. Tell me how often that happens?

Anyways, Larry and the other guy (don't remember his name) have NEVER been able to come close to duplicating those ets they ran that evening. Larry's been stuck in the hupper 14s low 15s ever since.

Nearly ALL modded 6 speed GT-S' run upper 14s/lower 15s. Check out www.newcelica.org and you'll see most everyone is in the 15.0-15.3 range. At my track (KCIR), I haven't seen a GT-S break a 15.5@90mph. I did see BryanH run a 14.0@101 in his GT-S, but that was with a 60 shot of NOS.

actually dave
there just were two good drivers who just popped up

maflyen: with his 15.2 (full interior) and 15.01 (no seats) in his celica GT

and ... BillyBrun with a GT-S who runs consistent 14.5s
he has a LSD, which seems to help launches alot. he gets about 2.2 - 2,3's
http://www.newcelica.org/ubb/Forum3/HTML/010135.html

also larryd ran that 14.4 two times. One time in 30 degree weather (which everyone talks about) and another time in 60 degree weather (which no one talks about)

Given that at redline, a Maxima is down around 30% of peak torque vs. a Celica GT-S who is still making close to peak torque... I'd expect a Maxima to lose to a GT-S on the freeway... and an automatic Maxima would hurt pretty bad given the gearing.

Stock for stock, a 5-speed gen4 should theoretically be competitive** with a 6-speed GT-S. A 5-speed gen5 should be a little better, as the high-end power fall-off is reduced considerably vs. the gen4.

In no case is a Maxima going to walk a GT-S, stock for stock.

Now that you mention a 60-100mph run though, I think I'm gonna need to take the `00 3.2TL and run a Celica GT-S from 60-100mph. 60-105mph is where you can get the beautiful 3rd-gear run in the TL. Ohhh baby.

** note that I did not say it would win, or that it could win. Just that the paper #s say otherwise!
