Poorman's UDP- disable power steering

I had a wierd thought as I was workin on my car tonight. The UDP spins the alternator, AC compress and power steering pump slower right? Well if you dont have the AC compressor running, the magnetic clutch wont be engaged, so thats not really an issue. As for the alternator, I cant slow that one down cause I gotta juice my stereo. But the power steering, I wouldnt mind if it took some more arm muscle to move. And I'm sure it places a drain on the engine, even when going straight. I'm thinkin aboug disabling the power steering by loosing its belt. Thoughts?

Personally, I don't think that disabling the power steering is worth the slight increase in horsepower. Think about it...how often do you need the 1 or 2 horsepower it might free up? Maybe 1% of the time.

I would not do it, but it's your decision.

I'd recommend against this. The power steering pump has it's own belt. By disconnecting the power steering pump, the remaining fluid doesn't get circulated and after a while your power steering pump seals will start leaking. This would be a very expensive fix. It should also be noted that most of the gain from the UDP comes from it's much lighter weight, not it's 20% underdrive.

have you ever tried steering the max w/o power steering? i'd like to see you parallel park or bust a U w/o power steering - especially when you're barely moving..

Tires weigh less if there is no air in them. Run without any air.

i drove my friend's civic and he took the power steering belt off. if the car isn't moving, it's quite a workout to turn the wheel. it only gets worse with a heavier car.
